About the Wine
From one of Washington’s most iconic vineyard sites comes a wine that defines Red Mountain’s power and precision. The 2021 Klipsun Vineyard Red Wine draws fruit from the legendary Klipsun Vineyard, planted in 1982 on the sun-baked slopes overlooking the Yakima Valley.
Since 2016, Klipsun has been owned and managed by the Terlato family, renowned stewards of fine wine whose global portfolio includes some of the world’s most celebrated estates. Under their care, Klipsun continues to uphold its reputation as one of Washington’s Grand Cru-caliber vineyards.
Founded in 1989 on Vashon Island, Andrew Will Winery has become a benchmark for Bordeaux-style reds in Washington. Known for its single-vineyard expressions and minimalist winemaking, the winery showcases the character of each site with restraint and precision.
These gravelly soils and fierce winds stress the vines just enough to produce small, thick-skinned berries—Cabernet fruit prized for its intensity, color, and age-worthy structure.
Under Andrew Will’s careful hand, the Klipsun bottling channels the site’s bold character into a deep, polished red layered with black cherry, currant, tobacco leaf, and graphite, all wrapped in fine, dusty tannins and subtle oak spice.
Balanced, powerful, and built to evolve beautifully in the cellar, this wine stands as a tribute to two Washington legends—Klipsun Vineyard’s world-class terroir and Andrew Will’s pursuit of elegance through restraint.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of tart black cherry, black plum and pomegranate, leather and pepper, and black tea. On the palate, you’ll find vibrant dry-medium to full body, delivering tart black cherry, black plum, and pomegranate, layered with leather, pepper, and black tea. The tannins are chalky-dusty, well-integrated, and supported by subtle oak.
Critical Reviews
The 2021 Red Wine from Klipsun is a mélange of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 34% Syrah, and 1% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 14 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Black cherry, blue plum, toasted cinnamon, mountain-dried herbs, potpourri, white peppercorn, and crushed slate. Tannins are chalky but well-balanced. I love the fruit and earth that sit perfectly on the mid-palate on the finish. ~96 International Wine Report
A Bordeaux blend from the estate on Red Mountain, the 2021 Red Wine reveals a deep ruby/plum hue to go with impressive red and black cherry fruits interwoven with notions of new leather, spice, and tobacco-like nuances. It's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. This classic Red Mountain red blend will evolve for 10-12 years, if not longer. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
Dense and brooding, but the pedigree shows through. Concentrated accents of blackberry, tobacco and crushed stone build tension and depth toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2032. 3,012 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator
The 2021 Red Blend from Klipsun wafts up with a seductive blend of sweet spices, cocoa, cedar shavings and dried black cherries. This is soft and enveloping with a zesty core of tart wild berry fruits and brisk acidity that maintains fantastic freshness. It takes a turn toward the savory spectrum through the finale, as espresso and dark chocolate hints add a pleasantly bitter twang. The Red Blend is 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Syrah, 31% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc from Red Mountain. ~ 91 Vinous Media
