About The Wine

La Jota Vineyard Co. has been growing grapes on Howell Mountain since 1888 — W.S. Keyes planted the first vines, Fredrick Hess built the stone winery a decade later, and both men took home medals from the Paris Exposition of 1900. Today the estate is part of Jackson Family Wines, sitting at 1,400 to 2,000 feet on volcanic ash and red clay soils above the fog line, pulling fruit from the 8-hectare La Jota estate and the 24-hectare W.S. Keyes Vineyard.

At the helm is Chris Carpenter, the same winemaker behind Cardinale, Lokoya, and Mt. Brave — widely regarded as one of the finest craftsmen of powerful, mountain-grown Cabernet of his generation. His approach is straightforward: maximum attention in the vineyard, minimal intervention in the winery. Native yeast fermentations, hand pump-overs, and 22 months in 75% new French oak from eight different coopers. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The 2021 vintage tells a specific story: wildfire smoke in 2020 reduced sunlight exposure, which set the vines up for yields down 30–35% the following season. Less wine, but extraordinary concentration — saturated dark fruit, ironstone minerality, and fresh garrigue running through every layer. Drink now with a long decant, or cellar confidently through 2040.

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 4% Merlot, 2.5% Petit Verdot. Powerful nose of dark currants, scorched earth, graphite, pine, savory herbs, and black cherry compote. Crème de violette and black floral notes add lift and complexity. The palate is full-bodied, weighty, and silky at mid-palate, tightening into a firm, structured finish with dusty, polished tannins and exceptional length. Best from 2027–2040.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Another incredibly concentrated, focused, insanely impressive wine — powerful nose of darker currants, scorched earth, graphite, and savory herb aromas and flavors. This full-bodied, dense, concentrated, powerful, inward beauty needs 4–6 years in the cellar but will age forever. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

So much black currant, dark fruit, pine cone, bark and pine needle aromas that show a depth and intensity with round, polished and creamy tannins. Medium to full body, with a complex and gorgeously flavored finish. Give this three to four more years to come around. ~97 James Suckling

A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 4% Merlot and 2.5% Petit Verdot, delivering scents of cedar, pine, black cherries, blueberries and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, fresh, smooth and silky on the mid-palate, then firmer and more structured, with dusty tannins on the lingering finish. Should age well for 20 years or more. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A fruit-laden red, with glistening mulberry, cassis and plum puree notes that drive through gleefully, flanked by violet and iris hints, plus a light sheen of anise and apple wood on the finish. Offers latent grip for the cellar. Drink now through 2040. ~94 Wine Spectator
