    About The Wine

To Kalon is not just a vineyard — it's Napa Valley's most storied piece of ground. First planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb, who named it from the Greek for "highest beauty," it sits on the Oakville bench where gravelly, alluvial soils and cooler hang times consistently produce some of California's most concentrated and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.

When Andy Beckstoffer purchased it in 1993, access to To Kalon fruit became one of the most coveted contracts in the entire Napa Valley.

Lithology's claim to that fruit belongs to a remarkable confluence of talent. International vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni purchased the former Harlan/Napa Valley Reserve estate in St. Helena in 2014 and founded Lithology with a geologist's eye — the name itself means "the study of rock and soil." His winemaking team is essentially a who's-who of Napa royalty: resident winemaker Matt Sands brings experience from Screaming Eagle and Bryant Estate, while legendary consultants Michel Rolland and Philippe Melka collaborate on every bottling.

The 2021 vintage has been widely called a generational year for Napa Cabernet — cooler conditions, extended hang time, and natural concentration combined to produce wines of extraordinary depth and precision. This wine, drawn from multiple blocks across the heart of To Kalon, was fermented in both concrete and French oak, then aged 22 months in 74% new French oak. Only 350 cases were made. The result is a wine built to evolve for decades — but impossible to resist even now.

95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc.

Opens with a deep purple hue and an immediately arresting aromatic profile: blue fruits, graphite, sweet tobacco, spring flowers, and a thread of crème de cassis that runs through everything.

The 2021 vintage's signature density is on full display — concentrated and powerful — yet the balance here is close to flawless, with silky tannins that build rather than grip and a finish of exceptional length.

On the palate, dark fruits expand into layers of chocolate, new leather, licorice, and lavender, all beautifully delineated and supported by bright acidity.

    What the Critics Said

Blended with 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard boasts a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling perfume of blue fruits, graphite, sweet tobacco, and spring flowers. It's another rich, concentrated, powerful 2021 delivering building, ripe, silky tannins, flawless overall balance, and incredible length on the finish. For the tech sheet geeks out there, this came from multiple blocks, was fermented in a mix of wood and concrete, and spent 22 months in 74% new French oak. ~ 98 Jeb Dunnuck

So much black currant with terra-cotta and lead pencil. Very intense. Full to medium body, with firm and refined tannins. Like a block. But there is a form and seriousness here that gives this solid tannins and muscles. ~ 97 James Suckling

A very sexy wine. Rich, pliant and super-expressive… showing exceptional balance and finesse. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, licorice and lavender are beautifully delineated throughout. ~ 97 Vinous Media

There are 350 cases of the 2021 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, which includes 5% Cabernet Franc. There's a lively dusting of dried spices and dusty earth over the top of mixed red and black cherries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and elegantly framed by softly dusty tannins that fade away slowly on the lingering finish. ~ 96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

    THE PRODUCER

    Lithology

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
