    About the Wine

“We were born and raised in the hills of Barolo—a land that shaped us, inspired us, and gave us a lifelong passion for wine.”

For more than a century, the Veglio family has tended the vineyards of the Langhe, beginning in the early 1900s in the village of Ciotto near La Morra. What started as a farmer’s dream with Angelo Veglio in the 1960s became a family legacy of crafting Nebbiolo-driven wines of depth and honesty. When Mauro Veglio took the helm in 1986, he revolutionized the estate—restoring vineyards, embracing innovation, and refining Barolo into something purer, cleaner, and more elegant. In 2017, Mauro passed the torch to his nephew Alessandro Veglio, who continues to honor tradition while pushing forward with a deep respect for the land and a vision for balance and longevity.

Today, the estate produces around 80,000 bottles from 23 hectares across La Morra and Monforte d’Alba, crafting four key Barolo crusArborina, Gattera, Rocche dell’Annunziata, and Castelletto—alongside classic Langhe reds.

Among them, Barolo Castelletto stands as one of the most powerful. Sourced from four hectares of southeast-facing vineyards between Monforte d’Alba and Perno, it’s grown on sandstone soils that lend structure, freshness, and striking aromatics. First labeled in 1996, Castelletto was also the first officially recognized cru of its name. Aged 24 months in French oak barrels (30% new, 70% used), it reveals dark cherry, mint, and eucalyptus notes over firm tannins and vivid acidity.

Only 6,000 bottles are made—a Barolo of precision, energy, and identity, already captivating in youth yet destined to evolve beautifully for decades.

2021 Barolo Castelletto is an elegant yet powerful Barolo from Monforte’s Castelletto cru shines with dark cherry, licorice, and balsamic notes of mint and eucalyptus. Fresh, tannic, and built to age.

    Tasting Notes

    100% Nebbiolo.

Intense and smooth, with incredible harmony of red fruits and delicate rose petals. Very elegant, with subtle hints of underbrush, mint, and licorice.

Vigorous, full-bodied, balanced. Great persistence in the tannins, but they are never too dry. Overall, a juicy wine. Final notes of blackberry and blueberry jam.

    Critic Reviews

Detailed and delicate aromas of rose petals, hibiscus, tile, and red currants. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with polished, supple tannins that turn chewy toward the finish. Lovely delineated red fruit flavors. It has an imposing tannin structure but is nuanced and approachable, with pretty fruit and linear acidity.  ~ 96 James Suckling

The 2021 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most potent of these wines. It exudes tons of textural depth and overall intensity. Dark cherry, red plum, blood orange, spice, and rose petal saturate the palate. All the 2021 needs is a bit of time to shed some of its baby fat. Today, the aromatics are especially alluring. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin round out a super-classic expression of Monforte's Castelletto district. ~ 95 Vinous Media

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Castelletto (with 6,500 bottles created) reveals power and important richness that is noticed in the wine's darker appearance. Blackcurrant and cherry are framed by licorice, tar and rusty nail. The Castelletto performs very nicely in 2021, showing balance, precision and power. You notice the oak as the wine opens in the glass. It ages in barrique for two years, with 25% new wood. ~ 95 Robert Parker

Fresh herbs bask in summer warmth alongside a bowl of sour cherries while delicate incense swirls through the afternoon air. The wine glides with focused intention, its elegant tannins pulled taut like a silk ribbon, revealing layers of depth that unfold with pristine, crystalline clarity. ~ 94 The Wine Enthusiast

Colorful mix of ripe cranberry, red cherry, and warmed baking spices. Supple, with a robust core of fruit, a spritely acidity, and tannins, and are pliable and not overly structured, but support the palate. Nutmeg and tobacco leaf linger on the medium finish. ~ 94 The Wine Palate

The 2021 Barolo Castelletto reveals a jeweled ruby color and is highly expressive on the nose, with violet perfume, black raspberries, menthol, and toasted sage. The palate is full and expanding, with fleshy noble tannins, a bright spine of acidity, warming spice, and a dark, brooding nature through the long finish. This is another commanding wine with good detail that will be worth aging and checking in on over the next 15 or more years. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck
