About the Wine

If you’re hunting for an insane mystery deal, this is the one. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo has long been one of Italy’s greatest bang-for-your-buck categories — James Suckling even calls Montepulciano wines “solid, rich, easy-to-like, and wallet-friendly.”

That’s exactly why we love this bottling — and why it usually disappears faster than we can restock it.

If you crave bright blueberry and blackberry fruit, creamy vanilla and toasted oak, and a mocha-tinged finish, this 2021 Mystery Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva is going to hit every pleasure point.

This wine comes from one of the region’s oldest family-run estates, originally planted over a century ago. The vineyards sit on southeast-facing hills rich in clay-limestone soils, nourished by a unique microclimate influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the Majella mountain slopes. It’s a tiny high-performing area where Montepulciano reaches rare depth and structure — so distinctive that the region earned its own small, prestigious DOC for quality.

The fruit for this mystery wine grows in a particularly prized hillside zone known for producing deep, finely textured Montepulciano Riserva. After harvest, the wine aged 8–12 months in French and Slavonian oak (40% new, 60% second use), giving it that silky structure and layered richness Montepulciano fans obsess over.

This is an Italian red that punches WAY above its mystery price — bold, plush, beautiful, and built for both drinking now and holding.

Tasting Notes

100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

The nose hits with ripe black fruit, forest floor, and warm spices, followed by rich layers of coffee, tobacco, and a touch of cocoa.

On the palate, it’s bold yet polished — dense, energetic, and deeply textured — with silky, well-shaped tannins that give the wine power without edge. The balance is spot-on: round, structured, and intensely flavorful all the way through the finish.

Critical Reviews

Delicate and floral, sweet and tart on the nose, with aromas of sour cherry, raspberry candy, violets, mocha and white pepper. Macerated berries and abundant milk chocolate headline the palate, before an earthy, herbaceous, peppery finish lifted by a current of acid. Another deeply pleasurable wine that doesn't sacrifice depth or sophistication. ~ 93 Wine Enthusiast

Lots of dark fruits and purple flowers followed by bitter chocolate, coffee beans and a touch of wet leaves. Full-bodied with chewy and juicy tannins, and balanced acidity. A rich, young red showing some good tension. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Sustainable. Keep this for two or three years to let it come around. Try in 2025. ~ 91 James Suckling
