About the Wine

Most people have never heard of Sarmiento, Chubut. That's exactly the point. Located at 45°33' Souththe most extreme winemaking address on earth — Bodega Otronia produces Pinot Noir in conditions that should be impossible: temperatures that rival Champagne, winds topping 110 km/hr, and a sun-baked desert landscape on the shores of Lake Musters. The vines are stunted and stressed. The fruit is concentrated and electric.

Named for the "Roaring Winds" that define this latitude, the 45 Rugientes Pinot Noir is Otronia's second-label expression — but make no mistake, this is not a second-tier wine. It draws from multiple blocks across both the Paico and Sierra Silva vineyards, each vinified separately and then carefully blended to best showcase the singular character of the Sarmiento terroir.

Winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia, named Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin MW, ferments in concrete vessels using 10–50% whole clusters, preserving freshness and aromatic lift, then ages 20 months in neutral French oak foudres and concrete.

The result is a Pinot Noir unlike anything from Burgundy, Oregon, or California — though fans of all three will find something to love here. Think the delicacy of a village-level Burgundy, the bright fruit purity of a Willamette Valley Pinot, and an electrifying, saline acidity that is entirely Patagonian. At 93 Points from James Suckling, this is one of the most compelling value Pinots from South America, from a producer already recognized as a benchmark for the entire region.

Tasting Notes

100% Pinot Noir from organically farmed Paico and Sierra Silva vineyards, Sarmiento, Chubut, Patagonia. Harvested mid-March 2021; aged 20 months in French oak foudres and concrete vessels.

Ruby-hued with an energetic, aromatic character. The nose delivers cherry, dried herbs, and rose, with earthy undertones that carry seamlessly to the palate.

On the palate, notes of blackberries and uplifting acidity take center stage, with fine-grained tannins and a dry, lean structure.

The finish is long and fruit-driven — compact yet complex, showcasing the variety's pure, fragrant side with a distinctly Patagonian mineral tension.

Critical Reviews

Savory, mossy red berries with a stony edge. Fresh but not too demanding on the palate, with nice volume and texture on the mid-palate. Fresh and chalky tannins linger in the finish. Around 30% to 40% whole clusters. Drink now. ~ 93 James Suckling

Of the 51 hectares that Otronia has planted in Sarmiento, on the shores of Lake Musters, half are pinot noir. This is from a selection of 13-year-old blocks of different clones on different soils that yield this wine, which was aged for 20 months in foudres. A pinot of pure tart red fruits and floral notes, sharp acidity, fine tannins, and herbal notes toward the finish. A fine, elegant, and purely fruity pinot. ~ 93 Descorchados

The 2021 Pinot Noir 45° Rugientes originates from Patagonia's southernmost vineyard, in Sarmiento, Chubut. Aged up to 20 months in French oak foudres and concrete vats, this ruby-hued wine exudes notes of cherry, dried herbs and rose. Dry and lean, a framework of balanced acidity compliments a delicate palate, culminating in a long-lasting, fruit-driven finish. A compact yet complex Pinot Noir, the 2021 showcases the variety’s fruity side. ~ 92 Vinous Media

A red wine made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes grown in the Sarmiento area of Chubut, fermented in concrete vats (partly with whole bunches) and then aged for 20 to 22 months in untoasted French oak foudres. Another excellent vintage, it displays fresh red fruit aromas, followed by floral, herbal, and spicy notes that are confirmed on the palate, all supported by vigorous acidity and fine, nervous tannins. Tense, crisp, and precise, it has a refined and persistent finish with saline, cherry, and earthy touches. ~ 92 Revista Adega

Hailing from the southernmost edge of Patagonia's wine region, this Pinot Noir thrives despite the challenges of a harsh, cool climate. It has an energetic character, with a nose of subtle earthy aromas that seamlessly carry through to the palate, followed by notes of blackberries and uplifting acidity. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast

A well-knit version, with layers of orange peel, fresh cardamom and tea leaf to the fresh Rainier cherry and Santa Rosa plum core, which lengthens and finishes around mineral-tinged tannins. Drink now through 2034. 3,500 cases made, 364 cases imported. ~ 90 Wine Spectator
