About The Wine

San Giorgio sits on the slopes of Monte Amiata in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the southeastern corner of Montalcino — literally next door to Poggio di Sotto, one of Brunello's most revered estates. The vineyards are a continuation of that coveted site, sharing the same climate, soils, and exposure. Same winemaking team, same uncompromising standards. When ColleMassari acquired San Giorgio in 2016, they didn't change a thing that mattered.

The Ugolforte bottling takes its name from a 12th-century bandit who led Montalcino's rebellion against Siena — an indomitable spirit bottled in 20-year-old vines and 24 months in 30-hectoliter oak. The 2021 vintage delivered structure and elegance in equal measure, and this wine proves it.

Dark core of red and black berry fruit layered with earth, leather, smoke, and herbs. Complex and elegant, full on the palate with firm tannin structure. Refreshing acidity frames a graceful finish. Cherry, plum, thyme, sage, and loam roll through a long, saline-edged close. It's the kind of Brunello that makes you understand why people collect this appellation.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The San Giorgio 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte (with 60,000 bottles produced), shows an intentionally accessible personality with dark concentration and sweet blackberry fruit designed for near- to medium-term enjoyment. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks with time in cement, the wine delivers texture and open-knit tannins that give it a cheerful and food-friendly profile. Made by the same team behind Poggio di Sotto, one of Montalcino’s benchmarks for cellar-worthy wines, this bottling favors immediacy without sacrificing balance. The fruit comes from 28 hectares of estate vineyards, reinforcing consistency across the range. ~94 WA

An excellent Brunello with notes of dried herbs, minerals, grapefruit and raw spices. Medium body with fine-grained tannins and a long, juicy finish. Drink now or hold. ~93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

San Giorgio Ugolforte

Founded in 1982. Joined the ColleMassari group of the Tipa-Bertarelli family in 2016. Located in Castelnuovo dell'Abete, in the south-east of Montalcino, just a few kilometres from the thousand-year-old Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Located on the slopes of Monte Amiata. San Giorgio estate vineyards are essentially a continuation of the coveted Poggio di Sotto site in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. San Giorgio is part of the Collemassari Group of estates. San Giorgio's vines are managed and vinified by the same winemaking team as Poggio di Sotto and Grattamacco. The San Giorgio estate is situated overlooking the Orcia valley and exposed to the climate of Mount Amiata. The estate extends over 142 hectares of which 26 ha are under vine and 26 ha are olive groves. Vineyards are positioned on steep rocky slopes at altitude ranging between 250 and 400 mt, facing east and southeast.
