About the Wine
Bolgheri is one of those rare places where everything seems to fall into place for great wine. The rolling hills, the salty sea breeze, the warm Tuscan sun—it all comes together to create reds that feel both luxurious and effortless. The wines here, mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, have that deep color, velvety texture, and balance of power and grace that make you want another glass before you’ve finished the first.
Tenuta Argentiera is one of the region’s stars. Perched on a plateau overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the vineyards soak up sunlight by day and cool air by night, giving the grapes this wonderful mix of ripeness and freshness. Even the name has roots in the land—“Argentiera” comes from the old silver mines that once dotted the hills. There’s a quiet strength in that, a sense of place that shows up in every bottle.
Their wines are polished yet soulful, made with a respect for nature and an eye for detail. The Villa Donoratico, in particular, is all about capturing Bolgheri’s magic—dark fruit, spice, a hint of coastal air, and that silky texture that makes you stop and think, “Yes, this is why I love Tuscan wine.”
The 2021 Bolgheri vintage received a 99-point score, and Wine Spectator said, "This might be the best vintage in Tuscany’s modern era; ample spring rains got the vines through the hot summer, while harvest time saw ideal weather for picking."
Tasting Notes
45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot.
Black cherries and blackberries, but eventually notes of salt and pepper push to the front. Cherries remain on the palate, with chocolate adding to the rich sweetness.
Critical Reviews
Attractive cabernet-based red with currant and berry aromas and undertones of lead pencil and spice. Herbs. Full-bodied with walnuts, chocolate and fruit. Very fine tannins with a finesse and beauty. Drinkable but better in 2025. ~94 James Suckling
This is big wine from a lower denomination that offers good value when compared to the estate's top-shelf releases. The Argentiera 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Villa Donoratico is up front in terms of mouthfeel with lots of immediate intensity delivered to the mid-palate. The wine is articulate and generous with thick layers of black fruit, stewed plum, sweet earth and pressed blackberry. You get everything you want from a Bolgheri Rosso. In fact, you get a wine that tastes more like a Bolgheri Superiore. The blend is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. ~94 Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The nose begins with black cherries and blackberries, but eventually notes of salt and pepper push to the front. Cherries remain on the palate, with chocolate adding to the rich sweetness, before a complex finish of warmth, spice and dusty chalk. Tannins cling while the acidity sings. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
