About The Wine

Campo de Borja doesn't get the attention Spain's famous red regions do. This is the bottle I hand people to fix that. Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded here in 2002 with a stated goal: build a world reference for Garnacha. The flagship is where they make that case.

It's 100% old-vine Garnacha, from head-trained vines planted between the 1920s and the 1970s — 40 to 70 years of age, rooted in red clay and slate between 500 and 800 meters. The best clusters go into small stainless tanks, get basket-pressed, then spend twenty months in new French and American oak. What comes out is opaque and dark: black cherry and plum, licorice and molasses, a turn of cinnamon, and a stony thread running underneath it all.

It drinks big, but it isn't clumsy. Solid tannins, real acidity, and enough freshness to carry all that weight. Open it an hour ahead and put it next to a ribeye or a leg of lamb. It'll do exactly what you want it to.

100% old-vine Garnacha. Opaque red-black in the glass. Super-ripe black fruit — cherry and plum — over licorice, molasses and a hint of cinnamon, with a stony mineral edge from altitude and oak. Full-bodied and rich, with solid tannins and bright acidity keeping it fresh through a long finish.
