About The Wine

Brewer-Clifton has been farming the Sta. Rita Hills since 1995, when founders Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton first recognized what the region's cool climate and sandy soils could deliver. Today the estate owns 60 acres across four vineyards—all 100% estate grown, all within the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.

The 3-D Vineyard was planted in 2007 to 10 acres, mostly Chardonnay. This is Brewer-Clifton's reserve-tier release: only 752 cases produced, drawn from a singular section planted to Wente and Mt. Eden clones. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed, fermented and raised entirely in neutral oak, with malolactic neither encouraged nor blocked—the wine finds its own balance.

The result is a Chardonnay built for the long game. James Suckling scored it 97 and called it "tensile, fresh and mineral-laden… so intense and taut, it is sure to age and improve." Medium gold in the glass, with honeyed stone fruit, orange blossom, chalk, flower oil, and brioche. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly textured, with integrated acidity and a finish that won't quit.

Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay at this level—97 points, estate fruit, neutral oak, a decade of longevity ahead—typically retails north of $100. You're looking at $70 for a six-pack. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it through 2032.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A very tensile, fresh and mineral-laden wine that's tangy in acidity and has an almost crunchy, lively texture. Made from a singular section of the 3-D vineyard planted with Wente and Mt. Eden clone grapevines. Lemon pith, limestone, crisp green apples. So intense and taut, it is sure to age and improve. Drinkable now but best from 2029. ~97 James Suckling

The dazzling 2022 Brewer-Clifton ‘3D’ Chardonnay is a dense, concentrated effort that has the weight and finesse to age gracefully. Sea salt dusted Meyer lemon, pie crust, and mango notes combine with the beautiful underlying stony minerals. Fresh and polished, with a seamless texture, this is beautifully evolved stuff that will cellar well over the next decade. ~95 Owen Bargreen

The 2022 Chardonnay 3D is a wine of real density and power. Wente and Mount Eden clone Chardonnay are so distinctive here. Apricot, white flowers, marzipan, mint and light tropical inflections build into the huge, enveloping finish. ~94 Vinous Media

Bright, polished and layered, this is a harmonious wine that blends apples, lemon zest, light baking spices and vanilla bean. Medium-bodied with a rich mid-palate, vibrant acidity and a sense of chalky minerality. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Evolving aromas of lemon-glazed apples grow more prominent as this wine opens on the nose. The palate is quite tense in structure yet bolder in flavor, offering golden touches of lemon, yellow apple and light toast. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

Apricot, peach, marmalade and candied ginger flavors are plump and juicy on an appealingly fleshy texture. Grace notes of Meyer lemon, satsuma tangerine and lemon oil add wonderful layers of complexity. Drink now. 666 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator
