An offshoot of Brown Estate—one of Napa Valley’s premier Zinfandel producers—Chaos Theory is a tribute to the family’s journey in the wine industry, a rollercoaster ride where leaps of faith have been the currency of survival. Founded by siblings Deneen, David, and Coral Brown, Brown Estate carved its niche in the early 90s, first selling fruit to top producers before taking a leap into winemaking. Chaos Theory, aptly named by David—a physicist and hobbyist astronomer—embodies the unpredictability of vintages and the art of self-organization in the face of nature’s randomness.

Fast forward to vintage #18, and Chaos Theory has grown up—but it still knows how to party. This 2022 edition takes a Bordeaux-style turn, leaning into its Merlot backbone while keeping that Zinfandel wild streak alive and kicking.

Tasting Notes

37% Cabernet Franc 21% Cabernet Sauvignon 21% Zinfandel 13% Merlot 8% Barbera. Maraschino cherry, red licorice, effervescent citrus, rose garden, chamomile blossom, Italian leather, and creme de cassis followed by cardamom, clove, cinnamon, churned cream, fresh vanilla, and a touch of graphite. Full body with juicy, creamy mouthfeel and supple tannins.

Critic Review

This concentrated Merlot-Zinfandel-Petite Sirah blend brings waves of cherry gastrique, raspberry liqueur, violets and caramel on the nose, while the palate leans into ripe blueberries, dark chocolate and raspberry coulis with expansive texture and velvety tannins. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
