About The Wine

Tom Burgess established Burgess Cellars in 1972 on the steep slopes of Howell Mountain, where Italian-speaking Swiss immigrants first planted vines in the 1870s. The estate that Warren Winiarski and Mike Grgich called home before launching Stag's Leap and Grgich has been crafting flagship Cabernet since inception — a half-century track record built on mountain fruit and continuity.

The 2022 Contadina Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Sorenson and Haymaker vineyards on the west and east-facing sides of Howell Mountain, where only 4% of Napa's acreage sits. Antonio Galloni called Burgess "the most impressive turnaround of 2022" — and this bottle proves it.

The wine opens with ripe black currants and lush blackberries, layered with sage, mint, and sweet tobacco. The palate is balanced yet lively, with a velvety finish that stretches long. It's the kind of Cabernet that drinks like it cost twice the ask — mountain structure and Napa depth at a price that makes buying the case feel smart.

Meghan Zobeck farms regeneratively to honor the valley's heritage and preserve what she calls the "magic" for the next generation. The result: 92 Wine Enthusiast, 91 Vinous, and $39.88 for a wine that punches well above its weight.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Juicy blackberries and currants form the background for fresh Mediterranean herbs and dried tobacco with a graphite finish. Mid-bodied with a focus on freshness and length, this Cabernet represents a shift in the Burgess style appealing to those looking for a comparatively lighter Napa Cab with flavor and persistence. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Contadina is a blend mostly from Burgess's valley-floor sites with some fruit from the Sorenson Vineyard. It's a soft, earthy Cabernet with lovely forward fruit and mid-weight structure. Spice, tobacco, incense and brambly notes are nicely delineated throughout. Give this a few years to soften. ~91 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Burgess Contadina

For much of Burgess Cellars' history Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship grape since inception in 1972. The two estate vineyards on Howell Mountain represent only 4% of Napa acreage. Burgess Cellars crafts an estate and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and also single-vineyard, single-block bottlings of Petite Sirah, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and an intentionally farmed rosé of Syrah. A library selection with every vintage from 1979 on is available in the tasting room. Tom Burgess established Burgess Cellars in 1972. The Howell Mountain slopes were first planted in the 1870s by Italian-speaking immigrants from the Swiss canton of Ticino. The Poncetta & Rossini families cultivated vines on the rugged mountainside at extreme elevations. Lee Stewart planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah grapes on Howell Mountain's steep hillsides, naming his winery Souverain.
