About The Wine

Step into the world of Chateau de Pez—Saint-Estèphe’s oldest estate, where history and luxury meet in every bottle. Established in the 15th century, Chateau de Pez was once owned by the prestigious Pontac family, founders of the legendary Chateau Haut-Brion. After centuries of familial ownership, it was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1995, and the estate has been revolutionized ever since, cementing its place among the Médoc’s finest.

Spanning 74 acres, with 64 acres planted primarily to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this estate thrives in the perfect terroir of Bordeaux's Left Bank. The gravel-rich, clay soils combined with the moderating influence of the Gironde River and the Atlantic Ocean create the ideal conditions for creating bold, balanced wines with exceptional depth and complexity.

In 2003, Chateau de Pez was reclassified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, recognizing its commitment to quality and excellence. As part of Les Exceptionnels, a select group of Bordeaux's finest Crus, it continues to lead the charge in crafting wines that showcase the best of the Médoc region.

Pez’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in respect for the land, using natural vineyard management to ensure the purest expression of its terroir. After fermenting in traditional oak vats, the wine is aged in a mix of new and used oak barrels for 16-18 months, resulting in a refined, elegant wine with soft tannins and a seamless balance—not the rugged masculinity often associated with Saint-Estèphe wines.

This is not just a wine; it’s a rare, age-worthy masterpiece—elegant, refined, and built to impress. Ready to indulge in the history and excellence of Chateau de Pez? Your perfect glass awaits.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Juicy red, blue, and black fruits, sappy herbs, violets, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2022 Chateau De Pez, a ripe, full-bodied, opulent Pez that has a balanced, layered style that's already hard to resist. I love how this has come together since En Primeur, and this is well worth a case purchase. It’s going to deliver the goods any time over the coming two decades or more. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Serious depth and complexity on the nose, showing a refreshing touch of spearmint to the pure blue fruit, cassis and minerals plus a hint of incense and graphite. Powerful but polished and taut in tannins with a linear set of fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Structured, fine-boned and well-dissolved with a fresh, lengthy finish. 38% cabernet sauvignon, 59% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Great for aging. Drink from 2027. ~94 James Suckling

The 2022 de Pez is a stellar wine. Plum, blood orange, exotic spice, cedar and new leather fill out the layers. Technical Director Nicolas Glumineau has increased the focus at Pez through stricter selection in the field and greater attention in the winery—something made easier with the new cellar. Among other things, the team also lengthened élevage to 18 months from the more typical 12-15 months. The 2022 is a major step forward at Pez. ~94 Antoni Galloni, Vinous Media

Even better in the bottle than it was from the barrel, Opening with licorice, black cherries, flowers, and blackberries, you also find of spice on the back of the perfume. On the palate, the wine is round, fresh, fruity, and loaded with crushed rocks, and stones, finishing with layers of licorice, and salty, chewy, black currants. The wine blends 59% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. After 10 years of renovations, and work in the vineyards, this marks the first vintage of de Pez offered as a future on the Place de Bordeaux. Drink from 2025-2037. ~94 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

Orange, lemon, lime, honey, caramel with an almost candy floss scent. Smooth and so satisfying on the palate, a lovely buttery element alongside signature bitterness. Complex and compelling, really thick and glossy but enjoyable. ~94 Decanter

Polished and charming, the 2022 de Pez bursts with aromas of blackberries, vanilla pod and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety palate that's integrated and expressive. This will offer a broad drinking window. As readers may remember, this estate has now been fully restructured and serves as something of a research and development laboratory for its sibling, Pichon Lalande, and director Nicolas Glumineau and his team have been working to bring more precision and purity to the wine. ~92 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
