About the Wine
One of only 14 Second Growths in the 1855 Grand Cru Classe classification of Bordeaux, Chateau Montrose produces only two wines. The second wine, La Dame de Montrose was created in 1986. The first wine has achieved perfection in recent years as a result of an ongoing improvement from one of France's wealthiest families, the Bouygues, who acquired the historic property in 2006. The iconic Chateau is one of the most visually harmonious and architecturally perfect Chateau anywhere.
The Bouygues brother, who owns Clos Rougeard, the preeminent producer of Cabernet Franc, in Loire Valley, also owns one of the most important companies in France. Bouygues is on the CAC 40 and is an industrial giant in construction, media, telecommunications, and real estate. The estimated $55 million dollar investment over the last decade has brought the Chateau to soaring new heights. It's now often considered at the top of the pyramid among the great second growths and in all of the Medoc.
Since 1815, the iconic chateau has been referred to as the "pink mountain". The winery is now a must-visit for tourists in the area. The polish, decadence, and pleasure of the Montrose wines mirror the investment and perfection of the estate.
Until recently, Montrose only made two wines. It now has added the Tertio. The discriminating reader will know that this tends to confer a very high-quality second wine. Montrose is firing on all cylinders and lovers of Bordeaux and St. Estephe will be lucky to have a few bottles for now and later.
Tasting Notes

This elegant second wine offers aromas of dark fruits like blackberries and blackcurrants, accented by tobacco, cedar, and a hint of floral notes. The wine balances power with freshness, finishing with a juicy, layered complexity that promises excellent aging potential.
Critical Reviews
Aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, pencil shavings and tobacco. Medium- to full-bodied, this is creamy and crunchy with open, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. 71% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon, 5% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc. ~95 James Suckling
The 2022 La Dame de Montrose is fabulous. It marries the power of the vintage with notable tension and freshness to balance things out. Dark cherry, mocha, crushed rocks, graphite and leather soar out of the glass. A truly magnificent wine, La Dame is a mini-Montrose in every way. Readers looking for a wine that punches well above its weight and price will find it all here. Don't miss it! ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Tobacco, cedar, sea salt, and dark black fruits open the nose. On the palate is where you find this is at its best, There are layers of dark-chocolate, espresso-tinted fruits with grace, and elegance, and a surprising amount of power for a second wine. Everything works, leaving you with length, elegance, and complexity that is ready to go, yet, has the uncanny ability to age for up to 2 decades. This is a true, mini-Montrose! The wine blends 71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2042. ~94 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Floral and dark chocolate scents with black berries. Beautifully textured, with grippy tannins, pure fruit and high acidity. Plush, just-chewy blackcurrants and cherries, dark chocolate, liquorice and salty stones. Lifted, minty menthol finish. Balanced, harmonious and confident, nothing overdone. A clear upgrade from en primeur and a standout second wine. ~94 Decanter
The 2022 La Dame De Montrose is based on 71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It's a beautifully textured, medium-bodied Saint-Estèphe with red and black fruits, some spicy, flowery nuances, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. This charming, textured, elegant, supple second wine will keep for two decades. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
One of the smart purchases this year is the 2022 La Dame de Montrose, a second wine that would embarrass numerous classified growths. Based on 71% Merlot, the Dame sees a more reductive élevage than the grand vin, which is perfectly adapted to this variety. Opening to reveal aromas of sweet cassis, cherries and berries mingled with hints of violets, spices and orange zest, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a powerful but controlled profile. ~93 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
