About the Wine
Imagine a wine that perfectly blends elegance, power, and refinement—Château La Tour Figeac is just that. With a stunning blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, this Saint-Émilion gem delivers an explosion of vibrant red fruits and floral notes, all wrapped in a silky, smooth texture. It’s the kind of wine that envelopes your senses, with layers of complexity that keep you coming back for more.
Chateau La Tour Figeac was born in 1879 from a land acquisition when the legendary Chateau Figeac began to divide its estate. Surrounded by prestigious estates such as the aforementioned Figeac to the south and Chateau Cheval Blanc to the east, La Tour Figeac resides within a favorable terroir that's been biodynamically farmed since 1997. Today, the Rettenmaier family owns and operates the estate, producing age worthy wines with power and class.
Nestled between the iconic estates of Château Figeac and Château Cheval Blanc, this estate benefits from a unique terroir of gravel, clay, and limestone soils—making it the perfect playground for crafting an exceptional wine. The meticulous winemaking process, with parcel-by-parcel fermentation and aging in 50% new oak barrels, ensures every drop is nothing short of perfection.
Under the guidance of Stéphane Derenoncourt, this wine has earned its place among Bordeaux’s finest. It’s a wine that speaks of luxury and finesse, offering a thrilling drinking experience now, with the promise of even greater rewards as it ages. Château La Tour Figeac is more than just a bottle—it's a statement of class, a must-have for any serious Bordeaux enthusiast.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Tasting Notes
65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, offering a vibrant and expressive profile. On the nose, it bursts with aromas of red fruits, rose petals, cassis, and a hint of blood orange. The palate is smooth, silky, and fresh, with juicy plum and berry flavors, complemented by touches of crushed stones, grilled citrus, and dark chocolate. The tannins are firm yet well-supported, contributing to a structured, elegant finish.
Critical Reviews
A juicy and expressive red with plum and berry character as well as hints of crushed stones and grilled citrus. Medium- to full-bodied, it has juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. 65% merlot and 35% cabernet franc. 10% whole-bunch fermentation. Very attractive now but even better in two or three years. ~94 James Suckling
Aromatic, structured, elegant, Round, supple, calm, smooth, tannins are a touch firm and present but overall really support the dark bramble fruits with cool, creamy, mint and dark chocolate touches. Feels serious, nicely chewy and plush, deep and layered with more plump, weight in the mid-palate, more stuffing around the fruit with cool but fresh blue fruits and blackcurrant giving that darker frame. Really well constructed, opulent yet it does keep a tight frame and good focus all the way through. Feels more like a Pomerol - I like it. Harvested 12 September - 23 September. Ageing 16 months; 40% new barrels, 55% one wine, 5% Amphora. Derenoncourt consultants. ~94 Decanter
Silky, fresh, supple, and creamy, the vibrancy in the fruits pairs perfectly with the sensuously textured, chocolate-tinted fruits in the mid-palate and long, medium-bodied finish. Drink from 2025-2045. ~94 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
The 2022 La Tour Figeac is elegant, polished and refined. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, blood orange and floral overtones lift from the glass. Fine, nuanced tannins frame it all in an effortless, exquisite Saint-Émilion that has so much to offer. It's all class and finesse here. ~94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening. Fresh cherries, plums, some nougat and orange zest, inviting bouquet. Juicy, ripe plums, discreet acidity, fine fruit sweetness, already developed, a charming food companion. ~94 Falstaff
The 2022 La Tour Figeac has a completely seductive bouquet of rose, cassis, mulberries and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it has a fleshy core of fruit, enveloping and layered texture and a long, perfumed and lively finish. This blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc is a real success and a wine that always rewards patience. ~93+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
