About The Wine

Founded in 1972 by John and Henrietta Goelet and French-born winemaker Bernard Portet, Clos du Val was built on a single conviction: that the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley could produce Cabernet Sauvignon capable of standing with the finest wines in the world.

That conviction was validated dramatically at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where the winery's 1972 Cabernet competed among the world's elite — and ten years later, at a rematch tasting, it took first place.

Today, the winery remains family-owned under third-generation CEO Olav Goelet, with winemaker Carmel Greenberg carrying the Bordeaux-inspired philosophy into a new era of precision and purpose.

The heart of Clos du Val is the Hirondelle Estate — named for the swallows that return to its eaves each spring — a 100-acre vineyard in the Stags Leap District planted to nine clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated in a naturally cool "valley within a valley," Hirondelle benefits from consistent marine influence off San Pablo Bay, producing grapes of uncommon freshness, structure, and age-worthiness.

Yettalil is Clos du Val's rarest and most ambitious wine — the fullest expression of the Hirondelle Estate and a direct line back to the founding vision of John and Henrietta Goelet.

Named for Henrietta herself, whose nickname "Yettalil" spoke to the grace and quiet strength that shaped the winery's earliest years, this is the wine Olav Goelet describes as the north star for Clos du Val's next half-century. It employs all five Bordeaux varieties grown across the estate and is made only in vintages and quantities that meet an exacting standard. The 2022 vintage — marked by a challenging mid-season heat event but ultimately shaped by the winemaking precision of Carmel Greenberg — produced a wine of striking elegance and composure.

Aged 20 months in 40% new French oak, it is structured for the long haul while offering real pleasure today. This is only the third edition of Yettalil ever released.

Eye: Opaque deep garnet-ruby with violet highlights; exceptional density and depth of color.

Nose: Expressive and layered — blackberry, plum compote, and crème de cassis open the conversation, followed by fresh sage, tobacco, graphite, and hints of menthol and cardamom. A beautifully integrated French oak note weaves through without dominating.

Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a plush, almost creamy entry that fans out across the palate. Pure blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit at the core; polished, grainy tannins frame the mid-palate with precision. The 2022 vintage's vibrant natural acidity keeps everything focused and alive through a long, spiced, persistent finish.

Drinking Window: 2026–2045. Approachable now with decanting; best from 2028 onward.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Fragrant and expressive with aromas of red and black currants, lavender and fresh spearmint. Medium- to full-bodied with supple texture and fine, integrated tannins. There’s a cool-fruit elegance, layered with floral spices and a touch of cedar. Balanced and refined with quiet persistence. Very good. Drink now or from 2028. ~97 James Suckling

The 2022 Yettalil, the estate's top wine, is superb. Elegant, silky and refined, this Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend offers lovely balance and plenty of class. This is a fine effort for the year. Pretty floral and spice notes lend nuance to this sophisticated, polished offering. ~94 Vinous Media

The flagship here and based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, 5% Carmenere, and 3% Merlot, the 2022 Red Blend Yettalil offers classic ripe, perfumed aromatics of red and black fruit, chocolate, incense, and spicy, savory nuances. It's rich and full-bodied, with a plump, rounded style, velvety tannins, and a good finish. ~ 93 Jeb Dunnuck

Sourced from the estate's Hirondelle Vineyard, the 2022 Yettalil Red Wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, 5% Carménère and 3% Merlot. Aromas of ripe cherries mingle with scents of menthol and hints of pencil shavings on the nose, while this medium to full-bodied wine is supple, even creamy at first, slowly fanning out across the palate and showing a bit more tannic structure before finishing long, mouthwatering and harmonious. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

In this satisfying blend of Bordeaux varieties, well-integrated tannins and balancedacidity carry aromas of flowering herbs through flavorsof currants, plums, and a cascade of spices, finishingwith cracked pine and fresh tobacco. Appealing while still understated, with still more to reveal from time inbottle. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

The warm gush of cassis and plum sauce is rather up front, with gently singed alder and apple wood notes helping frame the licorice-coated finish. Its moderate underlying energy is in line with the vintage, but the finish shows staying power. For the hedonist crowd. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Carmenère and Merlot. ~ 91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Clos du Val

The name 'Clos du Val' is French for 'small vineyard estate of a small valley.' The winery continues to craft wines of balance and complexity. Clos Du Val is a member of the Stags Leap District Winery Association.

Earned global recognition in 1976 with involvement in the Judgment of Paris. Still family-owned today. Farms two estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District and Yountville appellations. Clos du Val began in 1972 when John and Henrietta Goelet purchased a parcel in what is today the Stags Leap District.

The winery's inaugural release, the 1972 Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon, was part of the California contingency that outscored French wines in the 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting. The 1972 vintage also became the overall winner in a 1986 rematch.
