About The Wine

Domaine des Baumard is one of the Loire Valley’s most respected family estates, renowned for its pristine, mineral-driven expressions of Chenin Blanc.

Based in Anjou, the Baumard family has crafted exceptional wines for generations, including historic holdings in Quarts de Chaume and Savennières. Their philosophy centers on precision: hand-harvesting, cool fermentations, and meticulous vineyard work that preserve purity, freshness, and terroir clarity.

The result is elegant, long-lived wines celebrated for their balance of richness and vibrant acidity.

Building on this legacy, Florent Baumard has become one of the Loire’s most talked-about winemakers—both praised and debated for his willingness to challenge tradition. In a region defined by longtime customs, he pushed boundaries early with screwcaps, innovative trellising, and a strict belief that each vintage should be shaped by minimal intervention, allowing the wine to fully reflect its terroir. His approach has turned sites like Clos Saint-Yves and Clos du Papillon into benchmarks for rich, textural Chenin Blanc balanced by electrifying tension. And in only the rarest years, he crafts the cult cuvée Trie Spéciale—a study in contrast: honeyed yet dry, plush yet firm, unforgettable in its depth.

This same commitment to purity, precision, and terroir-driven character defines the 2022 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Loire, a wine that captures the intensity, minerality, and refined power that make Baumard one of the Loire’s true standard-bearers.

100% Chenin Blanc.

Pale gold in the glass, this Chenin opens with lemon oil, white peach, wet stone, and subtle chamomile.

The palate is taut, focused, and deeply textural—a rush of citrus, orchard fruit, crushed rock, and saline drive carried by laser-like acidity. Lees aging adds quiet depth without weight, finishing long, mineral, and electric. Pure Savennières tension from start to finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

There's a briny richness to this savory white, offering notes of smoke, green herbs and crisp Granny Smith apple layered with ground ginger and cinnamon. Silky in feel, with chiseled firmness on the savory finish, where gunpowder and fresh hay hints echo. ~ 90 Wine Spectator

This bottling offers a good representation of what dry Chenin Blanc can do in your glass. Wet stone and sunset-kissed orchard fruit fill the nose of the wine including dried-red-apple slice, orange zest, quince and lilac blossom. The palate is round with mineral-driven elements that surface throughout the length of the taste that finishes with hints of bread dough. ~ 90 Wine Enthusiast
