About the Wine

Imagine this: The legendary Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine Romanée-Conti, teaming up with Larry Hyde, one of Napa’s most iconic vineyard owners. What do you get? A Chardonnay that blends Burgundy’s precision with Napa’s bold, sun-kissed fruit. The 2022 Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay Carneros isn’t just another Chardonnay—it’s the product of an extraordinary partnership that wine lovers have been dreaming about for years.

Larry Hyde planted the Hyde Vineyard in Carneros nearly 40 years ago, and since then, he’s been shaping Napa Valley’s reputation as one of the finest wine-growing regions in the world. What started as a passion project—planting vines on land that had once been home to an apple orchard—has now grown into one of the most sought-after vineyards in the area. The vineyard's grapes are highly sought after, used by top wineries like Aubert, Kistler, and Ramey.

But it wasn’t until 2000, when Larry Hyde joined forces with Aubert de Villaine, that this project truly reached its full potential. The marriage of Napa’s rugged beauty with Burgundy’s refined techniques set the stage for a wine that’s nothing short of exceptional. The Hyde de Villaine estate reflects the perfect harmony between the two winemaking worlds—combining old-world tradition with the very best Napa fruit.

The Hyde de Villaine wines aren’t just about the people behind them—they’re about a philosophy. Sustainability is at the heart of the vineyard, with Larry Hyde leading the charge on innovative farming techniques that not only enhance the quality of the fruit but also preserve the land for future generations. The Hyde family’s commitment to responsible farming practices is reflected in every bottle of wine that carries the Hyde de Villaine name.

The 2023 Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is a shining example of what happens when two worlds collide. Made from old-vine fruit, carefully nurtured through every stage of the winemaking process, this Chardonnay is pure Napa Valley magic with a touch of Burgundy elegance. The wine’s complexity is a direct result of the care and attention given to the vineyard and the fruit, combined with the expertise of winemakers who have spent decades crafting exceptional wines.

Aging: 70% in barrel, 20% in foudre and 10% in concrete.

Tasting Notes

100% Chardonnay. Freshness and brightness take center stage in the precise structure of this wine. Aromas of jasmine and lime blossom pair with Meyer lemon and green apple, which lead to hints of baking spices and toasted brioche. The palate bursts with vibrant acidity and mouth-coating textures, giving way to a lingering mineral-driven finish. The focus and tension of this wine promise aging for years to come.

The finished wine is bottle unfined and unfiltered.

Critical Reviews

This wine is truly excellent, showing a mineral-edged nose with pure energy and tension. Aromas of struck match, citrus blossoms, crushed stones and salted nuts. The palate is taut, with no hard edges and driving acidity that keeps you salivating for minutes. Closing in on perfection. Drink or hold. ~99 James Suckling

The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is airy, gracious and understated. It’s a wine of restraint, even for this house. Seamless and elegant in the glass, the Hyde is exquisitely finessed. Today, the 2023 is rather quiet, but time in bottle should help this really blossom. Aeration brings out the wine's mid-palate oiliness and texture. The Hyde was aged 70% in barrel, 20% in foudre and 10% in concrete. The precision here is unreal. ~96 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
