About The Wine

2022 Holocene The Black Square Cabernet Sauvignon. Inaugural vintage from winemaker Todd Alexander and his wife Carrie — a tiny-production project from the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Ranked #5 on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100. 98 Wine Enthusiast, 97 Decanter. This is Cabernet Sauvignon that rewrites what the Rocks District can do.

The Rocks District sits in the Walla Walla Valley, planted over ancient riverbed cobblestones that force vines to dig deep. The basalt stones store heat by day and radiate it at night, extending hang time and concentrating flavor. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives here — structured, mineral-driven, built for the cellar — but never has a Rocks Cabernet reached this level. Todd Alexander calls this the most delicious wine he's ever made, and the scores agree.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, dry-farmed, organic practices. Full-bodied but never heavy. Rich black fruits, woodsmoke, tobacco, iron-like minerality, and that signature Rocks saline burst. Wine Enthusiast calls it "balance personified" — concentrated blackberry, dark espresso, olive, charred steak, all framed by silky tannins and amped-up acidity. Decanter highlights the wine's "undeniable elegance," its umami depth, crushed violets, black olive, smoke, and hot stone aromatics. Elegance and grace backed by structure, supple texture, and the acidity to cellar a decade or longer.

This is American Cabernet that challenges everything you expect from the category. Not monolithic. Not dull. A wine that moves between power and finesse without hesitation — the kind of bottling that makes collectors rethink their allocations. Six bottles. The beginning of something rare.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the River Rock and Stone Valley vineyards (it's mostly River Rock), and it's 100% varietal that's resting in 70% new French oak. It has a Pauillac (or is it St.-Estèphe?) like style in its smoky black fruits, iron, leafy tobacco, and black olive-driven aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet elegant Cabernet that has flawless overall balance, fine, polished tannins, and beautiful length. This is a riveting Cabernet Sauvignon from winemaker Todd Alexander that's up with the crème de la crème of the variety. ~ 96-99 Jeb Dunnuck

As black as squid ink, The Black Square is balance personified. A concentrated blackberry aroma seems as dark as the wine's name, with equally dark espresso, olive and charred steak notes joining it in the abyss. A dark plum and ripe boysenberry flavor combo is accompanied by traces of salty Mission olives, wet slate and silky smooth tannins. The one bright feature illuminating the way is the wine's amped-up acidity. None so black. ~98 Wine Enthusiast

An undeniably elegant Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rocks District, crafted by Todd Alexander of Holocene in the Willamette Valley. This is a wine of umami, savoury depth, medium-bodied, with crushed dried violets, black olive, smoke and hot stone aromas. The palate shows refinement, and a delicate darkness ripples across the palate with a beautiful feral disposition. Notes of struck iron, dark forest tones, and crushed-stone minerality all frame a lingering note of wild fruits, chopped mint, and wild herbs. A wine that challenges your expectations of American Cabernet Sauvignon. ~97 Decanter

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon The Black Square mixes muddled blackberries and grilled herbs with crushed stone, gravel dust and dried violets. It's seductively round and supple with fresh acidity and ripe red and black fruits accentuated by hints of lavender and olive. The 2022 finishes long and potent, with silken tannins, a saline mineral tinge and a savory herbal thrust. ~ 95 Vinous Media
