About The Wine

Keplinger Wines was founded in 2006 by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, a project rooted in an obsession with Rhône varietals and the hillside vineyards capable of expressing them at their most profound. Helen holds an MS in Enology from UC Davis and built her craft at some of California's most elite addresses — Paradigm Winery, Bryant Family Vineyards, and Kenzo Estate — but it was three years immersed in Spain's Priorat region, working alongside consultant Claude Gros at Cellers Melis, that crystallized her winemaking philosophy: terroir is everything, and the winemaker's role is to listen.

Named Vinous Winemaker of the Year 2023 by Antonio Galloni, previously celebrated by Food & Wine Magazine in 2012, and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen is one of California's most decorated and sought-after winemaking talents. Keplinger remains a small-lot, single-vineyard operation — meticulous, minimal-intervention, and relentlessly focused on site.

Sumo is her Cote Rotie twist on Petite Sirah: 89% Petite Sirah co-fermented with 5% Viognier, then blended with 6% Syrah, all from the single-vineyard Shake Ridge in Amador County.

Shake Ridge is the key. Rocky, volcanic, organically farmed, and divided into three distinct Petite Sirah blocks. The first is 80% rock — tiny, thick-skinned berries that bring intense aromatics and dense structure. The second block sits on a western slope with slightly thinner skins, adding juicy mid-palate elegance. The third, north-facing and cooler, contributes vibrant, fresh fruit that keeps the wine from getting heavy.

The result is a wine that both Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni scored 94 points. Deep purple, layered with ripe black and blue fruit, chocolate, violet, black pepper, lavender, licorice, and clove. Medium to full-bodied with supple tannins and a rich, polished finish. Dunnuck calls it "light on its feet and graceful" despite the intensity. Galloni says it's "impeccably done" with "so much character and freshness."

This is Petite Sirah for people who think Petite Sirah is a blunt instrument. Pull the cork tonight — it'll drink beautifully over the next decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

I always love this cuvee from Keplinger, and her 2022 Sumo checks in as 89% Petite Sirah, 6% Syrah, and the rest Viognier, all of which comes from Amador County in the Sierra Foothills region of California. It's a deep purple-hued effort with terrific ripe black and blue fruits interwoven with chocolate, violet, and peppery herb nuances. It's medium to full-bodied and has a rich, layered mouthfeel, supple tannins, and a great finish. It brings plenty of richness and intensity while staying light on its feet and graceful. Drink bottles over the coming decade. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Sumo is one of the finest wines in this range. Inky dark fruit, black pepper, lavender, licorice and clove are dialed up. Potent and lush, with tons of intensity, the 2022 is impeccably done. There's so much character and freshness here. ~94 Vinous

Bold and robust with aromas of blackberry, ink, graphite, black olive, licorice and spice. The palate is full-bodied with seamlessly integrated tannins and a rounded, textured mouthfeel. This is not for the faint hearted but has a excellent level of polish and refinement. Drink or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling

Perfumed with violet and citrus blossoms, while displaying a rich core of olallieberry and black currant, flanked by orange peel, iodine and spice details. The finish is long, polished and filled with citrusy dark chocolate notes. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Viognier. Drink now through 2036. 200 cases made.~ 93 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Keplinger

Founded by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, Keplinger is a boutique California producer laser-focused on single-vineyard Rhône varietals — Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre — crafted with minimal intervention to let each vineyard's terroir do the talking.

The project was born from Helen's years immersed in the wine culture of Spain's Priorat and southern France, where she and DJ fell deeply in love with the Mediterranean way of life and the food-friendly wines of the Languedoc and Rhône — inspiration she brought home to California. Named Food & Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen's work has been called one of the most exciting and innovative winery projects to emerge in California in years, with small-lot production and a cult following to match.
