About The Wine

"Located near Courthezon, La Bastide Saint Dominque is run with incredible talent by Eric Bonnet." ~Jeb Dunnuck

There is a small, sun-drenched plot in Châteauneuf-du-Pape called Pignan. It sits on sandy, clay-limestone soils in the northeast corner of the appellation, just beside the legendary Château Rayas.

The vines growing there were planted in 1920 — over a century old, their roots driving deep into the earth, their yields tiny, their fruit impossibly concentrated. This is the source of Secrets de Pignan, the flagship wine of La Bastide Saint Dominique and one of the most singular expressions of old-vine Grenache in the entire Southern Rhône.

The Bonnet family founded La Bastide Saint Dominique in 1976, built around a former 16th-century chapel in Courthézon, at the foot of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape hills. Gérard and Marie-Claude Bonnet started with just a few hectares and a simple ambition: to make wines that were honest, elegant, and expressive of their place. Today, their son Eric runs the estate — overseeing both vineyard and cellar — and under his watch the domaine has grown to 50 hectares and earned certified organic farming status since 2014.

The Secrets de Pignan is everything that Châteauneuf-du-Pape does best in its most refined register. Pure 100% Grenache — destemmed, fermented in stainless steel with cap punching and pump-overs, then aged 20 months in tank — no oak, no manipulation, just the fruit of centenarian vines on one of the appellation's rarest terroirs. Unfined. Unfiltered. Only 4,000 bottles produced. If you know Napa Cabernet at its most elegant — concentrated but refined, powerful but silky — this is that level of seriousness, from France's most storied Southern Rhône appellation. Best from 2027, drinking well through 2047.

2022 Secrets de Pignan opens with gorgeous, floral aromatics of ripe cherries, wild strawberries, spring flowers, Provençal garrigue, licorice, and meaty nuances.

The palate is medium- to full-bodied, delivering silky, seamless layers with super-fine tannins that are pure and expressive. Sandy mineral notes and precise berry fruits anchor a wine that is intense rather than heavy, with a long, chalky finish showing depth and elegant structure. A fine, chiseled Grenache with purity and class throughout.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Secrets de Pignan brings another level of purity and precision, with gorgeous, floral notes of ripe cherries, wild strawberries, spring flowers, licorice, and meaty nuances. It's full-bodied, has a seamless, layered mouthfeel, fine tannins, and a great finish. ~ 95-97, Jeb Dunnuck

A fine, elegant and chiseled 100% grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The nose reveals notes of wild berries, wafers, grilled herbs, stones and a touch of burnt fennel. It’s medium- to full-bodied with finely grained tannins. Such purity and class to the silky texture, yet it has tension and verve. Infused and stunning. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Suckling

An elegant and smooth style of Châteauneuf, ripe but not overly concentrated, with balanced alcohol and acidity, some sandy mineral notes and precise berry fruits. The super-fine tannins are pure and expressive. It's not a powerful style, but an intense one, with a long finish. Pure Grenache from vines aged more than 100 years old, from the sandy soils of Pignan nord; all aged in stainless steel. ~ 95 Decanter

Ripe, lush, silky, and vibrant, the wine is packed with layers of sweet, kirsch, strawberry, chocolate, and black raspberries. Elegant, as well as rich, this is one of the wines of the vintage. The wine is made from 100% old vine Grenache. Drink from 2026-2040. ~ 95 The Wine Cellar Insider

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Secrets de Pignan might very well be the best rendition of this cuvée since the towering 2016 vintage. Vivid spice box, thyme, forest strawberry, raspberry, licorice and white pepper exhale from the glass. Offering excellent concentration and intensity balanced by refreshing acidity, the 2022 is enveloped in ripe tannins and concludes with an expansive finish. Production was 4,000 bottles. ~ 94 Vinous Media
