About The Wine

Legend has it that the lord of Puligny-Montrachet divided his land among his heirs: the eldest son, the Chevalier; his daughters, the Pucelles; and the so-called Bâtard. Each received a piece of the hillside, and each gave rise to a legendary climate.

Today, Chevalier-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles, and Bâtard-Montrachet stand as some of the most revered names in Burgundy, shaping the very soul of the region’s greatest white wines.

The 2022 vintage delivered intensity without sacrificing poise. Warm, sun-filled days pushed the fruit to full ripeness, while natural freshness held firm, preserving balance and tension. Guided by a sustainable approach to viticulture, Olivier Leflaive and his team captured the clarity of the season, translating a generous year into a wine that remains focused, precise, and unmistakably Burgundian.

Olivier Leflaive is a legend in Burgundy, and his family’s winemaking roots run deep. His philosophy? Respect the terroir, embrace tradition, and craft wines that tell a story. The House, founded in 1984, has become synonymous with elegance and precision, working with some of the most coveted vineyards in the region.

2022 is looking to be a great year in Burgundy. Decanter said, "Despite the (very) hot and dry season, 2022 wasn’t a typical année solaire, according to the verdicts of Burgundy’s winemakers, with quality and quantity to be found, many early-drinking options, but reds to lay down, too. Overall quality is very high for red wines. There is more concentration in 2022… even if you try to make wine for the future, they are showing quite well right now." Demand for Burgundy is soaring. Demand for exemplary Burgundy at prices like this is even more so.

2022 Olivier Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is crafted entirely from Chardonnay, sourced from this powerful, broad-shouldered Grand Cru site straddling Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The vineyard’s deep soils give the wine its signature weight and depth, while careful fermentation and élevage in French oak, followed by extended aging on the lees, build texture without muting the site’s natural energy.

The aromatics open with striking complexity, where smoky and peppery notes weave through ripe apricot and toasted almond. On the palate, richness and precision move in lockstep, echoing the nose with both tenderness and authority. The finish is long, expansive, and deeply resonant, leaving a lasting impression of power refined by control.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

One of Olivier Leflaive's top wines, harvested from vines owned by the firm. It has all the great concentration that Batard promises, balanced by lively, citrus acidity for a memorable and appetizing expression. So pure and focused on the palate and long in the finish. Medium- to full-bodied. Will age well for decades. Best after 2028. ~ 96 James Suckling

Ripe, buttery fruit aromas touched with hints of spice, cream, and acacia blossoms make a showy first impression. It carries through on the palate with admirable richness and depth of flavour, to a long, complex finish. Yet it's the wine’s finesse and elegance that makes it genuinely outstanding. The domaine farms four parcels in Bâtard, most of it on the Puligny side, including some very old vines that give the wine its characteristic structure and depth. ~ 96 Decanter
