About The Wine

Founded in 1988, Patz & Hall has become one of California’s premier producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a sharp focus on single-vineyard expressions from top-tier sites across the Sonoma Coast, Carneros, and Russian River Valley.

The winery was established by four partners: Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz, each bringing their own expertise to the brand. Over time, Patz & Hall earned a reputation for elegant, expressive wines that showcase the nuance of California’s cool-climate vineyards.

Now owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Patz & Hall continues its legacy under the guidance of founding winemaker James Hall, who remains deeply involved in the winemaking process.

The winery is especially known for its close grower partnerships with some of California’s most iconic vineyards, such as Gap’s Crown, Dutton Ranch, and Hudson Vineyard. Patz & Hall wines have earned widespread critical acclaim, including multiple 90+ scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and have been featured in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines list—a testament to their consistent quality and craftsmanship.

The 2022 vintage in Sonoma was remarkable, marked by a series of climatic challenges and triumphs. Below-average rainfall during the winter months was mitigated by the heavy rains in March and April. A sustained heatwave in August accelerated ripeness, leading to a compressed harvest.

The 2022 wines are shaping up to be exceptional, with delightful fruit profiles, acid structures, and concentration. It’s a vintage that captures the essence of Sonoma’s terroir, promising wines that are vibrant, complex, and true to their vineyard origins.

100% Pinot Noir.

Fresh red cherry and just-ripe strawberry lead the way, framed by bright, cool-climate acidity. Savory layers of pine oil, toasted sugar, and wild bramble add depth and intrigue.

Fine-grained tannins give the wine structure and elegance, making it effortlessly versatile at the table.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of golden apples, pears, butterscotch, hazelnuts and lemon cream. On the palate, flavors of candied citrus, caramel and green apples. A stylized yet polished wine. Medium-bodied. ~ 92 James Suckling

Robust aromas of dusty cherry, cocoa powder and caramel jump out on the nose of this Pinot. The palate brings a wave of sour cherry, spiced berry compote and rose petal flavors with rich barrel spice and tea notes lingering on the finish. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast

Matured in 28% new French oak, the 2022 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has inviting aromas of cranberry, red cherry, charcuterie, mossy bark and potpourri. The full-bodied palate features earth-laced flavors and glossy oak spice. It has silky tannins, bright acidity and a long, spicy finish. ~ 90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Sleek and fresh, with a pinpoint feel to its bitter cherry, red tea and light sous-bois details. ~ 90 Wine Spectator
