About The Wine

"If one considers the total production of all the Peter Michael cuvées... and the diversity of their wines... Peter Michael Winery may be the best-run winery of its size for world-class quality." ~ Robert Parker.

“Les Pavots,” translating to The Poppies, was named by Lady Michael in tribute to the wild California poppies that blanket the Knights Valley estate in brilliant color each spring. The vineyard rests along the slopes of Mount Saint Helena, where elevation, volcanic soils, and optimal sun exposure shape a wine of remarkable structure and aromatic clarity.

This proprietary blend—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot—expresses both its noble Bordeaux heritage and its distinctive California origin. Since its inaugural 1989 vintage, Les Pavots has earned a reputation for refined power and precision, offering vivid blueberry and dark fruit notes, a graceful hint of herbs de Provence, and a seamless integration of the classic red Bordeaux varieties.

Sir Peter Michael didn’t just create a winery—he sculpted a legacy. From the foothills of Oakville to the heights of Mount St. Helena, his family's 100×100 vision ensures this paradise remains in their stewardship for a century. This is more than a vineyard; it’s a sanctuary of elegance, care, and unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

Nestled between 500 and 600 feet above sea level, this Oakville gem thrives on a perfect combination of slope, soil, and sunlight. The hillside vineyard basks in ideal conditions, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot to ripen to perfection. The result? A wine with depth, structure, and unmistakable elegance.

Today, Paul and Emily Michael carry forward the family’s tradition, joined by the next generation who have grown up with the land in their veins. This wine is a testament to their dedication—a rare gem produced with care, precision, and a touch of magic.

"A truly bold, powerful and focused Bordeaux-style blend with an intense core of black fruits, great tannin structure and sense of energy that drives through as you taste. Perhaps the original and current best example of red-blend perfection from Knights Valley. So well-balanced, ripe and generous, with blackberries and raspberries that expand on the palate. Drink now or hold." ~96 James Suckling

"The 2022 Les Pavots is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot from fruit harvested September 12 through October 14. It has pure, layered aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, violet, iodine, chocolate and thyme. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and mineral-driven, its dark flavors laced with graphite. It’s structured by powerful, grainy tannins and juicy acidity, and it has a long, floral finish. It will benefit from several years in the cellar." ~95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Intense and sculpted and full of intensely fragrant dried herbs, garrigue, cassis, olive tapenade, savoury and lifted. Touch of dried fruits on the finish, fig and prunes, reflecting the heat of the vintage, and this had one of smallest yields in decades. Harvested through to mid October. 70% new oak for ageing, Morgan Maureze head winemaker at Peter Michael since 2019." ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
