About the Wine
In 2003 Robert Parker called the Shafer Estate, "one of the world’s greatest wineries." The Shafer family is no stranger to the spotlight, receiving critical praise from wine critics abound. The family has produced Wine Spectators "Wine of the Year" along with being recognized by the James Beard Foundation as "Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year." Through all their success and accolades the Shafer Vineyards has remained one of Napa's premier Family owned and operated Estates. There's no better time than now to discover the magic of family-produced Cabernet from one of Napa's best.
One Point Five takes its name from the term “a generation and a half,” coined by John and Doug Shafer to describe their long father-and-son
partnership. Since 1983 this family team has worked together to manage their Stags Leap District winery. A portion of this wine is from the Shafer estate 'Hillside' vineyard and a portion is from the nearby 'Borderline' vineyard.
It's important to recognize that Shafer is still a family operation and very much hands-on. The total production at Shafer is significantly less than many of the large, well-known commercial brands. You can taste the difference.
Shafer Vineyards is a 30,000 case winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafer family owns and farms 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Petite Sirah.
"Elias Fernandez, in his usually understated manner, has engineered quite a feat at Shafer over the last few years in gradually bringing added vibrancy and freshness to these wines without saying much. Then again, the wines speak for themselves. Today, the style at Shafer is very contemporary and quite different from the image many consumers have about the wines. Readers who have not tasted Shafer in some years owe it to themselves to do so. The art of reinvention is very much alive here." ~Vinous Media
Aging: 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels
Tasting Notes
92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. One Point Five is aromatically bright and overflowing with elegant, energetic flavors of red summer berries, black cherry, rose petal, and red and black plum, along with mocha, cinnamon, and spices. The seamless, silky tannins create a lush mouthfeel now and hold the promise for more riches to come with careful cellaring.
Critical Reviews
Dripping ripe plums and other dark fruits are spun through with aromas of cracked pine and pitch for a complex Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa icon, Shafer Vineyards. Succulent and mouthwatering with melting tannins and a persistent finish, this is a wine with plenty of potential to age. ~95 Wine Enthusiast
Polished and expressive, with classic black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, graphite and cedarwood. Soft and supple, juicy and red-fruited on the palate, with emerging blue fruit nuanced by star anise and coriander cream. The tannins are present, but gentle and feather-like, gliding to a sweet-spiced finish. Rounded out with 3% each of Petit Verdot and Merlot, and 2% Malbec. ~95 Decanter
This bottling brings a slightly lighter aromatic touch to the Shafer reds, with its red cherry and strawberry aromas over a very full body. Broad, ripe and generous red fruit is wrapped in moderate tannins for good structure and some aging potential. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is based on 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 2% Malbec that was bottled in May of 2024. Tons of juicy red and black berries, incense, new leather, and spicy notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a juicy, elegant mouthfeel, good richness, and outstanding length. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
While the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five includes some purchased fruit, the aim is for it to become fully estate once new plantings come into production. It's an incrementally richer, darker and more concentrated wine than Shafer's TD-9, with black cherries wrapped in a subtle cloak of almost ephemeral cedar and vanilla. Full-bodied and velvety textured, with a lingering finish, it should drink well for at least 15 years. ~93 Wine Advocate
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a gorgeous wine in this challenging vintage. Soft, silky and expressive, the 2022 offers tons of appeal in a mid-weight style that is all charm. Dark-toned fruit, leather, cedar and blood orange all meld together. This is impeccably done. ~92 Vinous Media
Plump and open-knit, with a friendly gush of plum sauce and boysenberry compote flavors coated with sweet toast and licorice on the finish. A subtle graphite edge gives just enough form for balance. Drink now through 2034. 12,000 cases made. ~91 Wine Spectator
The 2022 One Point Five is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with notes of preserved plums, fruit cake, and Morello cherries, backed up by hints of Indian spices and fallen leaves with a touch of graphite. Full-bodied, the palate is chock full of dried berries and prune flavors with a chewy texture and just enough freshness, finishing on a stewed tea note. ~91 The Wine Independent
