About the Wine
If you enjoy bright, acidic, and aromatic whites like Pinot Grigio or occasionally sip on Sauvignon Blanc, it's time to give Riesling a try. It's wonderfully refreshing, effortlessly approachable, and often overlooked simply because it’s not as widely known or available as its more famous counterparts.
Trimbach is one of the Top Alsace producers. They produce the highest-quality premium Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines, which constantly achieve great accolades. If you want to discover the true power and aging capacity of a high-quality Riesling, Maison Trimbach should be at the top of your list. This Maison is crafting some of the most exceptional white wines in the world.
Wine Spectator said, “In Alsace, although most wines tend to be dry and fuller-bodied than their German counterparts, Trimbach's house style is quite the opposite: graceful and intense, with an austere character.”
This Maison has been around since the 16th century when the Trimbach family arrived from Switzerland. Twelve generations of disruptive winemakers have impregned their expertise into Trimbach. Today, Pierre Trimbach, an enologist who graduated from Beaune, is leading this world-renowned estate.
Trimbach’s location couldn’t be more perfect. Its semi-continental weather brings extreme temperatures, with very cold winters, which are optimal for high-quality Riesling to thrive. The soil is composed of marl-limestone-sandstone and shell limestone (Muschelkalk), which gives Trimbach's wines a remarkable personality.
The 140-acre vineyard is planted with vines of 45 years of age on average. They’re distributed in some of the best terroirs in Alsace: Ribeauvillé, Bergheim y Hunawihr. Each of them provides different and exciting characteristics to the wines.
Trimbach’s vineyards are managed under sustainable practices and certified by the HVE3. For more than 10 years, they’ve been doing fully organic viticulture.
Tasting Notes
100% Riesling.
Pale, bright straw yellow with aromas of lemon peel, honeyed fruit and menthol on the nose. Ripe, supple and rich, yet lean and precise with excellent mineral character. This elegant Riesling, dry and precise, is a worthy accompaniment to a wide variety of dishes especially shellfish and white meats.
Critical Reviews
Already on the nose this has a terrific interplay of stone fruit and herbal freshness with a tantalizing touch of spices. You feel the power and concentration of Alsace dry riesling from a warm, dry vintage, but also a wonderful citrusy freshness. A delicate chalky minerality echoes through the very long finish. 100% from estate vineyards in Ribeauville and Bergheim. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling
The 2022 Riesling Réserve is from top vineyards in Ribeauvillé and Bergheim that haven't been sourced for the grands crus but are partly seriously old. Bottled in April 2023 and already released, the wine displays a clear and refined, intense and elegant bouquet of fully ripe and spicy fruits but also remarkably floral talents. The wine is lush and intense on the refined and elegant palate, provided with some Muscat-like aromas, ripe, saline acidity and very fine tannins. The finish is harmonious, fruit-intense and backed up by a serious mineral structure. Superb. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. We published reviews of 18 vintages of the iconic Riesling Clos Sainte Hune in one of the last issues, including the latest from 2019, which has been cultivated in the grand cru Rosacker for 100 years. Beyond that, and as always, I tasted a pretty wide range from vintages here in spring and in late autumn last year. All the crus, whether grand cru or not, are of superb quality. ~93 Wine Advocate
The 2022 Riesling Réserve is mostly picked on limestone soils, including the Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru. A lovely stoniness defines the nose, with a serene chamomile and bright lemon lift. The palate adds rounded, generous, juicy Mirabelle fruit to this, edged with an ethereal herb savor, sinking into that deep, cool depth of the limestone. The 2022 is stony, bright, juicy, lip-smacking and taut. This is very Trimbach. ~ 92 Vinous Media
