    About The Wine

Typhon Estates isn’t just another name in Napa—it’s a multigenerational legacy rooted in the rugged slopes of Oakville and Atlas Peak.

It emerged in the 2010s as a boutique Napa Valley label from the Bartlett family, channeling decades of regional heritage into focused mountain Cabernet.

Up here, in vineyards carved from boulder-strewn volcanic soils, the Bartlett family has spent decades proving that greatness comes from refusing to take shortcuts. Everything about Typhon is shaped by place: the wild elevation of Atlas Peak, the perfect climate of Oakville, the family’s treasured heritage, and a team whose guiding principle is simple—make the best possible wine.

And then there’s the secret weapon: winemaker Chad Alexander. You might know him from our Dolum releases, but his story runs deep—starting at Hess when he was too young to even taste the wine, followed by years crafting elite Napa Cabs at Robert Craig.

Typhon is his passion project, and it shows.

His fingerprints are all over Lumen 2022: precision, power, and mountain-driven purity that only a winemaker with his résumé could pull off. It unleashes a deep rush of blackberry and blueberry wrapped in savory forest floor and a whisper of licorice. True to Howell Mountain, it flexes serious structure—bold, muscular, and confidently built.

This Cab comes in full throttle—lush, fleshy, and almost weightless in how effortlessly it moves. A rush of whole-berry black and blue fruit explodes on the palate, layered with deep ripe cherry and a savory, almost wild undertone that keeps things seriously interesting.

The tannins are sleek and polished, the acidity glides right alongside them, and the whole thing finishes with that “I need another sip” pull that only the best bottles deliver.

    CRITIC REVIEWS

    What the Critics Said

A lushly generous licorice-coated blockbuster, flooding the palate with blackberry preserves and sprinkled with black pepper. An accomplished mountain Cab with gracious tannins and balanced oak. ~ 95 The Tasting Panel

A truly classic expression of Howell Mountain, with bold black and blue fruit aromatics, dark chocolate, and loamy earth. Rich, juicy, and generous on the palate, it leads with alluring blueberry and muddled blackberry, carrying that intense, chocolatey quality so emblematic of the appellation. The tannins, while present, are surprisingly supple, ripe, and well integrated—a hallmark of the 2022 vintage, when intense heat swept through the valley over Labor Day weekend. Remarkably, this wine emerges cool, suave, and unscathed, with a welcome sense of approachability and ease. It’s dangerously hard to put down. ~ 94 Decanter

    THE PRODUCER

    Typhon Estates

Typhon Estates is a boutique, family-run Napa project born from the Bartlett family’s multigenerational roots in Oakville and Atlas Peak—two of the valley’s most prized, mountain-driven terroirs. Founded in the 2010s, the estate carved its identity high in the volcanic slopes where low yields, boulder-strewn soils, and meticulous farming shape intensely structured wines.

Winemaker Chad Alexander—whose career spans Hess, Robert Craig, and numerous elite Napa labels—brings the final spark, channeling power, purity, and precision into every small-batch release. Typhon is Napa mountain Cabernet with heritage, heart, and no shortcuts.
