About The Wine

Red Mountain is Washington's tightest argument for serious wine — a compact AVA where basalt-driven intensity meets surgical precision.

WeatherEye Estate farms some of the appellation's most carefully engineered blocks, purpose-built for a climate that routinely hits extremes. High-density plantings on north-northeast facing slopes shield fruit from summer sun that can spike to 118°.

WeatherEye Vineyards is a renowned high-altitude wine estate on Red Mountain in Washington, founded in 2004 by Cameron Myhrvold and managed by Ryan Johnson. Known for its innovative growing practices in a challenging environment, the vineyard produces exceptional small-batch wines, particularly Rhône and Spanish varietals, as well as distinctive white wines celebrated for their minerality and acidity.

The 2022 Estate Grenache comes from a 0.3-acre block called 'La Mesita' — a sandy basalt outcrop planted at high density using goblet training. The block acts as its own wind shelter, tucked into terrain that protects the vines while letting them ripen fully in a climate that can turn brutal.

Fermented in 30% new French oak, the rest split between amphora and neutral oak, then aged 10 months before moving to stainless steel. The approach pulls concentration without losing lift — Red Mountain intensity without heat stress.

Wildflowers, citrus, lemon zest, and sandalwood open into a juicy core of red, blue, and black fruits. Beautifully structured with roundness and texture. After 24 hours open, it evolves to dried blueberry, worn saddle leather, and graphite framed by fine-grained polished tannins. The finish is long, carrying clover, bee pollen, and lemon drop through the fade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Grenache comes from several parcels in the estate, including one dramatic site near the top of the vineyard. Once on the nose this takes on red rose petals, kumquat rind, Middle Eastern spices, pulled pork and shades of Linzer torte. The palate is silky and refined with serious texture, weight and length. Dense and weightless, with bright underlying acidity, enjoy now and over the next ten years to come. Drink 2026-2036. ~ 97 Owen Bargreen

This wine is a love letter to the Grenache grape. The aromatics are as fun as a cat purring in your ear, with macerated strawberries, orange zest and pine needle aromas holding court. The wine's rich cassis flavors are punctuated by notes of clove and citrus. The wine feels so elegant and clean in the mouth, it is a joy to sip.~96 Wine Enthusiast

The 2022 Grenache Estate was fermented with 30% whole clusters and matured for 16 months in 10% new French oak. It has pure, detailed aromas of strawberry, red cherry, garrigue, powdered sugar and floral perfume. The full-bodied palate is elegant in style with high-toned, floral flavors and silky tannins. It’s balanced by bright, mouthwatering acidity and has a long, layered finish. 202 cases were made. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Grenache WeatherEye Estate is perfumed and ethereal, sporting a high-elevation varietal aromatic profile as crushed raspberries come together with dusty earth, bouquet garni and crushed peppercorns. This is lifted and spry, with juicy acidity supporting a vivid core of ripe red and black fruits as a crunch of tactile minerals and subtle tannins collect toward the close. The 2022 lingers long while maintaining a graceful and refined persona, showing youthful poise without coming across as aggressive or severe. What a darling. This is a perfect example of how well Rhône varieties fared in 2022. ~ 94 Vinous Media

Red plum, kola nut and nutmeg with cherry cola, anise and sweet oak. Jammy black and purple fruit, fennel and dried herbs. Bold and boozy, but carries good length and flavour. ~ 91 Decanter

THE PRODUCER

Weathereye Estate

Perched atop the windswept ridgelines of Red Mountain in Washington's Columbia Valley, WeatherEye is a bold, meticulously crafted estate conceived by Cameron Myhrvold in 2004 and built over nearly two decades of visionary planning.

The 440-acre property features nearly 40 acres under vine, organized into 70 micro-blocks tailored to the site's striking diversity of soils — from basalt bedrock to sandy loess — with Rhône, Bordeaux, and Spanish varieties planted across extreme slopes and elevations. Named 2022 Northwest Winery of the Year, WeatherEye has earned widespread critical acclaim for its radical, high-altitude viticulture in terrain once considered too rugged to farm.
