About The Wine

Red Mountain is Washington's tightest argument for serious wine — a compact AVA where basalt-driven intensity meets surgical precision.

WeatherEye Estate farms some of the appellation's most carefully engineered blocks, purpose-built for a climate that routinely hits extremes. High-density plantings on north-northeast facing slopes shield fruit from summer sun that can spike to 118°.

WeatherEye Vineyards is a renowned high-altitude wine estate on Red Mountain in Washington, founded in 2004 by Cameron Myhrvold and managed by Ryan Johnson. Known for its innovative growing practices in a challenging environment, the vineyard produces exceptional small-batch wines, particularly Rhône and Spanish varietals, as well as distinctive white wines celebrated for their minerality and acidity.

The 2022 Estate Syrah is pure varietal from those same engineered blocks — Syrah built to handle heat without tasting heat-stressed. Fermented in 30% new French oak, the rest split between amphora and neutral oak, then aged 10 months before moving to stainless steel. The approach pulls concentration without losing lift.

In the glass: wildflowers, citrus, lemon zest, and sandalwood open the wine. The core shows juicy red, blue, and black fruits with beautiful structure and roundness.

After 24 hours open, it evolves into dried blueberry, worn saddle leather, and graphite, framed by fine-grained polished tannins. The finish is long, carrying clover, bee pollen, and lemon drop through the fade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

All destemmed and raised on one-third new barrels, the 2022 Syrah Estate is pure Syrah magic with its smoky red and black fruits, ground pepper, game, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. Coming all from a site at the top of Red Mountain, it has a beautifully balanced mouthfeel, medium to full body, ripe, sweet tannins, and a great finish. Those who doubt the quality of Washington State Syrah owe it to themselves to try this. I love it today, yet it should evolve for 15+ years with ease. ~ 98 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 WeatherEye Syrah had some stems added and is 100% varietal. Dried sage, white pepper dusted bacon, Black Forest cake tar and tobacco leaf all combine on the nose. The palate is dense and delicious with a seamless texture and lovely red and dark fruits with a smoky and savory edge. Drinking beautifully now, watch this evolve over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2026-2036. ~96 Owen Bargreen

The 2022 Syrah Estate was fermented with 30% whole clusters and matured for 16 months in 60% new French oak. It has pure, expressive scents of blueberry, blackcurrant, chargrilled meats, mint chocolate, star anise and soaring lavender perfume, and it continues to unfurl additional aromatic nuances as it spends time in the glass. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and complex, and its oak spice is seamlessly integrated. It’s structured by chalky tannins and bright acidity and has a very long, layered finish. 190 cases were made. ~ 96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The WeatherEye vineyard speaks through the 2022 Syrah Estate, with a classic bouquet that blends pencil lead and rock dust with peppery wild herbs, dried roses and blackberries. It casts masses of ripe dark fruits across the palate under an air of blue and purple inner florals, as a core of brisk acidity maintains fantastic balance. It's long and structured yet the tannins here are silky and soft, as the 2022 leaves a resonance of sweet spice and bitter tinge of extra-dark chocolate to fade. ~ 94 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Weathereye Estate

Perched atop the windswept ridgelines of Red Mountain in Washington's Columbia Valley, WeatherEye is a bold, meticulously crafted estate conceived by Cameron Myhrvold in 2004 and built over nearly two decades of visionary planning.

The 440-acre property features nearly 40 acres under vine, organized into 70 micro-blocks tailored to the site's striking diversity of soils — from basalt bedrock to sandy loess — with Rhône, Bordeaux, and Spanish varieties planted across extreme slopes and elevations. Named 2022 Northwest Winery of the Year, WeatherEye has earned widespread critical acclaim for its radical, high-altitude viticulture in terrain once considered too rugged to farm.
