About The Wine

Edna Valley is one of California's coolest-climate appellations — a narrow, fog-wrapped valley just five miles from the Pacific that delivers the long hang time Pinot Noir craves. The result: intensity without weight, fruit without jammy heat, the kind of balance that makes Burgundy lovers pay attention.

Claiborne & Churchill has spent 42 years proving you don't need Napa prices to drink serious wine. Founded by Clay Thompson — a former professor of Ancient Norse Languages turned winemaker — and Fredericka Churchill, the winery built its reputation on Alsatian whites before turning serious attention to Pinot Noir. Their daughter Elizabeth has joined the family operation, and the focus on cool-climate Edna Valley fruit has never been sharper.

The 2023 vintage opens with strawberry, rhubarb, white pepper, and a whisper of toasted oak. On the palate: fresh red fruit, a hint of allspice, youthful tannins, and the kind of vibrant acidity that keeps you reaching for the next glass. Fermented in aged oak for structure and texture, it's the kind of wine that makes $50 Pinot drinkers wonder why they've been overpaying.

This is $30 Pinot Noir that drinks like it costs twice that. Pull the cork tonight with roast duck, beef tenderloin, or a good charcuterie board — or let it develop another year in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Earthy aromas of game and petrol meet with raspberry and cranberry on the dynamic nose of this bottling. The gamy streak carries through the sip, giving a savory edge to the boysenberry core. A firm tension holds everything in check. ~93 WE
