About The Wine

Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the renowned Stags Leap District. The winery was first recognized for its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976, establishing its place as one of Napa Valley’s most iconic winery estates.

The Cabernet from this estate upset the French Bordeaux competitors at the French Culinary Institute

Tasting of 1986. Still family-owned today, Clos Du Val farms 350 acres of estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Carneros, and Yountville appellations and continues to craft wines of balance and complexity, showcasing the fruit from the outstanding terroir.

2023 Napa Valley vintage isn’t just another great year – it’s the year that will be etched in history. Wine experts are calling it "the vintage of a lifetime," and for good reason. The perfect blend of cool temperatures, morning fog, and balanced sunlight created conditions so exceptional that they’re being compared to Bordeaux's iconic 1961 vintage. As The Wine Independent put it, 2023 is "a winemaker's dream in terms of wine style." Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil calls it "one of the most phenomenal vintages ever in Napa Valley."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A stunner with this new release, grapes are sourced from Yountville, Stags Leap District, and other prestigious Napa sites. Aromas of just-baked blueberry pie waft from the glass. The satin mouthfeel is lined with dark chocolate-violet graininess. With a perfection of balanced ripeness, the wine demonstrates structure along with a vivid acidity. ~ 96 The Tasting Panel

Black cherries dominate the nose, joined by hints of cassis and tobacco leaf, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is firm without being hard or edgy and finishes long and silky. ~ 94 James Suckling

An expressive vintage with the potential to age, this Cabernet from Clos du Val captures the inky dark fruits, dark chocolate, and cascade of fresh herbs so classic to the cuvee with the intensity and lengthy structure of the vintage. Concentration with verve are a highlight. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

Rose petal, spice and new leather meld into a core of dark red/purplish fruit. There's a good bit of tannin, making this a pretty serious appellation wine. ~ 92 Vinous Media

A super value in ready-to-drink Napa Cab, Clos du Val's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. Black cherries dominate the nose, joined by hints of cassis and tobacco leaf, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is firm without being hard or edgy and finishes long and silky. ~ 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is fresh and juicy, with a slightly understated style to its black cherry and blackberry compote flavors, all laced with light singed alder and savory hints and then dusted with a cocoa note on the finish. Drink now through 2033. ~ 90 Wine Spectator
