About The Wine

Founded in 1972 by John and Henrietta Goelet and French-born winemaker Bernard Portet, Clos du Val was built on a single conviction: that the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley could produce Cabernet Sauvignon capable of standing with the finest wines in the world.

That conviction was validated dramatically at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where the winery's 1972 Cabernet competed among the world's elite — and ten years later, at a rematch tasting, it took first place.

Today, the winery remains family-owned under third-generation CEO Olav Goelet, with winemaker Carmel Greenberg carrying the Bordeaux-inspired philosophy into a new era of precision and purpose. The heart of Clos du Val is the Hirondelle Estate — named for the swallows that return to its eaves each spring — a 100-acre vineyard in the Stags Leap District planted to nine clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated in a naturally cool "valley within a valley," Hirondelle benefits from consistent marine influence off San Pablo Bay, producing grapes of uncommon freshness, structure, and age-worthiness.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is Clos du Val's most direct expression of Hirondelle, available exclusively to estate visitors and wine club members. The 2023 vintage — which Greenberg has described as one of the best in years, marked by exceptional color and flavor concentration from a naturally cool growing season — produced a wine of striking depth without sacrificing the winery's signature restraint.

It is a Cabernet that looks both ways: rooted in the Bordeaux classicism Portet brought from France five decades ago, and alive with the precision that defines Clos du Val's modern chapter.

Eye: Deep, dense ruby with violet hints at the rim; excellent color depth reflecting the cool-season concentration of the 2023 vintage.

Nose: Expressive and layered — espresso, dark chocolate, and blackberry jam lead, followed by dried herbs, licorice, and a whisper of graphite. A note of fine French oak integrates seamlessly rather than announcing itself.

Palate: Potent and structured, yet shaped by a classicist's hand. Dark fruit — blackcurrant, black plum — anchors the mid-palate, framed by silky but purposeful tannins. A vein of fresh acidity runs through, keeping the wine focused and long. Dried herb and cocoa notes trail into a finish of real persistence.

Drinking Window: 2027–2040. Approachable with decanting now, but built for medium- to long-term cellaring.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District) is redolent of graphite, plum, black cherry, incense and dried herbs. Bold and racy, with superb depth, the 2023 is compelling right out of the gate. All of this fruit is from the estate vineyard. There's plenty of tannin and acid, but it is very nicely balanced. At around $90 a bottle, the 2023 offers serious value in wine that shows just how compelling the vintage is. ~94 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Clos du Val

The name 'Clos du Val' is French for 'small vineyard estate of a small valley.' The winery continues to craft wines of balance and complexity. Clos Du Val is a member of the Stags Leap District Winery Association.

Earned global recognition in 1976 with involvement in the Judgment of Paris. Still family-owned today. Farms two estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District and Yountville appellations. Clos du Val began in 1972 when John and Henrietta Goelet purchased a parcel in what is today the Stags Leap District.

The winery's inaugural release, the 1972 Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon, was part of the California contingency that outscored French wines in the 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting. The 1972 vintage also became the overall winner in a 1986 rematch.
