About The Wine

Frog's Leap has been making Chardonnay against the grain since 1985 — and in Napa, that takes conviction. While most California Chardonnay reached for oak, butter, and tropical weight, John Williams went the opposite direction: a single hillside site in Carneros, dry-farmed organically, and made with a restraint more common in Chablis than in the Napa Valley.

John Williams arrived in Napa in 1975 with a return bus ticket and $40 in his pocket — and never used the ticket. Trained at UC Davis and shaped by early stints at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Spring Mountain Vineyard, he founded Frog's Leap in 1981 and has made every vintage since. In 1989 he became one of the first winemakers in Napa to earn CCOF organic certification, driven by a conviction that healthy soils — not winemaking intervention — are what make great wine. Today he works alongside his son Rory, who oversees viticulture and brings his own generation's perspective to the cellar.

The fruit comes exclusively from the Truchard family's steep shale and sandstone hillside — the same site Frog's Leap has sourced from for four decades. That geology is everything here.

Decomposed shale and sandstone don't coddle the vine; they stress it, slowing ripening and driving minerality into the fruit. The result is a Chardonnay that tastes like where it grew.

The winemaking is as deliberate as the farming. Up to ten separate picks over the course of a month capture different sections of the vineyard at their precise peak. Each lot begins fermentation in new French oak for just a few days before being racked into concrete tanks, where the wine finishes and ages sur lie. The concrete preserves freshness and temperature without adding flavor — the exact opposite of what most California Chardonnay aims for.

The 2023 opens with spiced apple, pear, citrus peel, and raw almonds — a nose that's precise and slightly reductive in the best possible way.

On the palate it's tense and juicy, with a medium-to-full body that manages to feel compact rather than heavy. Tart apple flavors carry through to a finish with just a hint of cream and good mineral grip.

Vivid and lingering, with the kind of freshness that makes you reach for another glass.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Chardonnay Shale and Stone, from Truchard in Carneros, is all class. Apricot, lemon confit, marzipan, tangerine peel, tropical fruit and a kiss of French oak grace this exotic, dynamic Chardonnay from Frog's Leap. Airy and gracious, with stunning balance, the 2023 is fabulous in every way. ~ 96 Vinous Media

Perhaps because the bar is so high for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, I don’t feel that it’s been disrespectful to argue that Frog’s Leap’s white wines are more impressive than its reds. And zealots who understandably believe picking time often separates the good from the great will be impressed by this wine resulting from 10 different pickings from the Truchard shale and sandstone hillside vineyard before briefly being fermented in oak before being switched to concrete. The wine is delicious – very elegant but rich in complexity though not in texture with mildly tart apple flavors, good minerality and a dollop of cream in the finish. ~ 94 Wine Review Online

Spiced apples and pears with hints of citrus peel and raw almonds on the nose. Tense and juicy with medium to full body and a compact, lightly phenolic texture. Vivid and lingering. Drink or hold. ~ 91 James Suckling
