About The Wine

Holocene Codex sits in the upper tier of Oregon Pinot Noir—a project built on whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast, and restraint. The 2023 is a transparent snapshot of the Willamette Valley, blended from vineyards across the AVA and aged 19 months in 20% new French oak. Only 274 cases were made.

The Willamette Valley is Pinot Noir's American stronghold—cool nights, volcanic soils, a long growing season that preserves acidity while ripening fruit. This is the same latitude as Burgundy, and the best examples share that balance of intensity and lift.

The wine was fermented entirely with whole clusters and native yeast, then developed over a long maceration using gentle extraction to preserve elegance and aromatic complexity. The result is a refined balance of red fruit, savory depth, and fine tannins—medium to full-bodied, silky, and built to age. Bing cherry, guava puree, cranberry, and salty minerals run through the core, with Mandarin orange zest and kumquat notes lifting the finish.

It's already nicely evolved and will cellar well through 2035. For $45, you're getting the delicate, site-expressive style that Oregon does better than anywhere else in the New World.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Holocene Codex Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley presents a glimmering ruby core shaded with garnet, framed by a delicate blush rim. Rested in 20% new French oak, it offers an intricate balance of fruit purity and subtle spice. The nose lifts with notes of cranberry compote, ripe cherry, and blood orange zest, laced with hints of rose petal and savory mineral tones. On the palate, layers of raspberry coulis and red currant mingle with herbal accents, all wrapped in refined tannins that glide effortlessly. A lively current of acidity keeps the wine taut and precise, while traces of hibiscus tea and exotic citrus carry into a long, graceful finish. Highly recommended. ~ 96 International Wine Report

The 2023 ‘Codex’ was stored in a small amount of new French oak (20%) before bottling. This is an incredible Oregon Pinot Noir. Silky and rich throughout the drinking experience, this exudes class with its core of Bing cherry, guava puree, cranberry and salty minerals, alongside Mandarin orange zest. This beautiful wine is already nicely evolved  and will cellar well for at least another ten years to coe. Drink 2025-2035 ~ 95 Owen Bargreen

Brooding violet aromas from this Willamette Valley appellation Pinot Noir are compiled from a selection of vineyards. Aromas of smoky cedar, early season blackberries, amaro herbs and turned earth. The palate is densely layered, with dark berries, earth and rich florals giving a compelling mouthfeel. ~ 94 Decanter

The first aroma wave is a big bowl of mixed berries. With every swirl of the glass, some new berry materialized, including raspberries, Bing cherries and blackberries. Aromas of juniper wood and cardamom take up background positions. Codex is nicely balanced, with blackcap raspberry, anise, nutmeg and English breakfast tea flavors taking over the olfactory assembly line. The wine's brightness and restrained alcohol were refreshing and appreciated. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

The 2023 Pinot Noir Codex entices with a whiff of sweet herbs, cedary spice and crushed wild strawberries. It's juicy and lifted with a crisp mineral core and hints of sour citrus. The Codex leaves a tart blackberry twang as a gentle olive nuance adds savory depth. This is a total pleasure to taste. ~ 92 Vinous Media
