About The Wine

Ribbon Ridge is one of the smallest AVAs in Oregon, and it grows some of the most serious Pinot Noir in the state. The marine-sediment soils — old seabed, full of ancient shell — give the wines a tension and a salinity you don't find on the valley floor. This is what that ground tastes like with nothing in the way.

Todd Alexander made his name on cult Washington Syrah at Force Majeure. Under his Holocene label he farms a small Ribbon Ridge parcel, all Pommard clone, dry-farmed, picked early enough to keep the wine at a featherweight 13.3% alcohol.

It's fermented with 100% whole clusters and raised mostly in neutral oak, so what reaches the glass is fruit and place, not barrel. Pale in the glass, lithe on the palate, and wired with the kind of acidity that makes you reach for the next sip. Wine Enthusiast gave it 95; International Wine Report and Owen Bargreen both landed at 97.

It's open and giving right now — you don't have to wait. But the structure's there if you do. I'd buy a few, drink one this fall with a roast chicken, and forget the rest in the cellar for a while.

100% Pinot Noir, Pommard clone, fermented with 100% whole clusters. Pale ruby in the glass.

The nose leads with tart red raspberry, cranberry and fresh cherry, lifted by orange and lemon zest, rose hip and a distinct saline, wet-slate minerality. Whole-cluster spice follows — bay leaf, black pepper, a whisper of Assam tea and baking spice.

The palate is lithe and energetic, driven by bright, mouth-watering acidity, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral, persistent finish. Built for the table, built to age.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Holocene Sidereal Pinot Noir from Ribbon Ridge is composed entirely of the Pommard clone, fermented with whole clusters from a tiny seven-acre site. The bouquet offers vibrant aromas of red plum and wild raspberry, interlaced with hints of dried rose, saffron, and citrus rind. On the palate, layers of tart cherry and blood orange unfold, framed by mineral tones of flint and subtle earthy nuances of truffle and damp moss. The texture carries both concentration and finesse, with polished tannins that glide effortlessly. A thread of saline minerality underscores the wine, giving it a lifted, mouthwatering quality that extends through the finish. Another wine that will age gracefully over the next 10-15 years. Highly recommended. ~ 97 International Wine Report

The astonishingly good and very pure 2023 ‘Sidereal’ is 100% Pommard clone Pinot Noir that was all whole-cluster fermented. It is sourced from a small, 7-acre parcel in the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Guava puree and Yakima cherry notes mark the nose alongside suggestions of cardamom dusted orange peel and salty soils. A bright salinity bursts through the core of pure red fruits, alongside crushed wet rock, and peat moss accents on the palate. Showing really good length and viscosity, this is a marvelous warm-vintage showing that is already nicely evolved. Just give this about 30 minutes in the decanter if savoring now. ~97 Owen Bargreen

The word sidereal means relating to the stars, particularly when measuring time or astronomical events. Which is weird for an earthly delight of a wine that makes time stand still while you attempt to decipher a vast array of aromas ranging from blackcap raspberries and cherry blossoms to wet slate and moon dust. Blackberries rule on the palate, with Assam tea, bay leaf and black pepper flavors easing along a lithe and nimble mouthfeel. Sidereal is also balance personified.~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

From a small parcel in Ribbon Ridge, this Pinot Noir sees 100% whole-cluster fermentation, yielding upright aromatics of amaro herbs, smoky rose petals, rosehip oil, and rich, ripe strawberry flesh. The palate is incredibly textured, and built to age, ripe red brambles, spiced chicory root and black tea give this wine a structured finish that will age wonderfully. ~94 Decanter

The 2023 Pinot Noir Sidereal is understated in the glass. Nuances of chalk dust and dried sage meet spiced blood orange on the nose. The palate is silken with savory red berry fruits riding a wave of cooling acidity as tactile mineral tones inform the close. The 2023 leaves a trace of sour citrus, and edgy tannins resonate through the long and youthfully tense finale. ~94 Vinous Media
