About The Wine

Bien Nacido Vineyard sits in the cool, coastal terroir of the Santa Maria Valley — a site with roots tracing back to 1837. Bob and Steve Miller planted grapes here in 1973, naming the vineyard 'Bien Nacido' — 'well born' in Spanish — for the passion and commitment they shared bringing it to life. Grenache thrives in these conditions, yielding wines of uncommon purity and depth.

Keplinger's 2023 Opalus Grenache is a study in restraint and mineral tension. The wine is savory and mineral-driven, layered with lush red, purple, and black fruits alongside hints of lavender and sage. Judicious French oak adds whispers of cardamom and clove, framing the concentrated fruit without overwhelming it.

Pure, focused, and quietly powerful — the kind of Grenache that makes supermarket reds feel emotionally vacant. Tremendously successful with duck breast and winter dried fruit sauce, though it's compelling enough to drink on its own. A unique expression from one of California's most storied vineyards.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Based on 100% Grenache from the Hammel block on the northwest side of the Bien Nacido Vineyard, the 2023 Grenache Opalus comes from head-trained bush vines rooted in a sand shelf and was aged 17 months in 600-liter demi-muids, 25% of which were new. Red plums, raspberries, sappy minty herbs, bouquet garni, and savory pepper all shine here, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's another brilliant wine from Keplinger that does everything right. I like it today, yet it's going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep through 2040. Drink 2025-2040. ~ 95 Jeb Dunnuck

This Grenache comes from head-trained bush vines planted on sandy soils at a later-ripening site. The wine is brightly alive with pure cherry and cranberry fruit, alongside Rooibos tea notes and hints of red liquorice drifting from the glass. On the palate, it is layered with super-fine, compact, tightly knit tannins that feel like superfine sand, carrying through to a chalky mineral finish. There’s a pop of white pepper and tangerine oil on the nose that reappears on the long finish. Just lovely. ~ 95 Decanter

The 2023 Opalus is 100% Grenache from Bien Nacido. Aromatic, deep and vibrant, the 2023 is endowed with serious class and personality. Tea leaves, dried fruit, crushed flowers and exotic red fruits lend tons of character. The 2023 offers unreal complexity and character from start to finish. ~ 94 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Keplinger

Founded by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, Keplinger is a boutique California producer laser-focused on single-vineyard Rhône varietals — Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre — crafted with minimal intervention to let each vineyard's terroir do the talking.

The project was born from Helen's years immersed in the wine culture of Spain's Priorat and southern France, where she and DJ fell deeply in love with the Mediterranean way of life and the food-friendly wines of the Languedoc and Rhône — inspiration she brought home to California. Named Food & Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen's work has been called one of the most exciting and innovative winery projects to emerge in California in years, with small-lot production and a cult following to match.
