Keplinger purchased land in Paso Robles in 2021 and planted it in 2022 at a site called Star Wagon, which is expected to come online in the late 2020s. For now, they are sourcing fruit from Paderewski Vineyard in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. The first Paso Robles wine they produced was the 2021 vintage, a blend of Rhône varieties planted at the site. This 2023, by contrast, is focused on Grenache and Mourvèdre, with a touch of Viognier. The wine is super expressive on the nose, offering beautiful raspberry, black cherry, and blue fruit notes, layered with violets and warm brown spices. On the palate, everything builds with ease and purity of fruit, joined by a hint of spicy smoked paprika, perfumed rose petal notes, and a luscious fruit core. All of this is balanced by a wonderful thread of chalky minerality and powdery tannins. Long, bright, and mineral-driven, this is a total joy to drink. ~ 95 Decanter
The 2023 Versailles is a Grenache/Mourvèdre/Viognier blend from Paderewski Vineyard in Paso Robles. Strong savory inflections meld into a core of dark red fruit, leather, incense and spice. This powerhouse Paso wine has a lot to offer. Mourvèdre very much drives the blend in terms of its flavor profile and overall structure. ~ 93 Vinous Media

What the Critics Said
THE PRODUCER
Keplinger
Founded by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, Keplinger is a boutique California producer laser-focused on single-vineyard Rhône varietals — Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre — crafted with minimal intervention to let each vineyard's terroir do the talking.
The project was born from Helen's years immersed in the wine culture of Spain's Priorat and southern France, where she and DJ fell deeply in love with the Mediterranean way of life and the food-friendly wines of the Languedoc and Rhône — inspiration she brought home to California. Named Food & Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen's work has been called one of the most exciting and innovative winery projects to emerge in California in years, with small-lot production and a cult following to match.
