About The Wine

Napa Valley Cabernet is king, but even a king needs a peer. As prices for premier Cabernet soar past $200, a new movement is taking hold among savvy collectors—one that prioritizes the artistry of the Proprietary Red. The 2023 Martellotto Napa Valley Proprietary Red Blend isn’t trying to replace your favorite Cab; it’s designed to stand right next to it, offering a level of nuance and "insider" sophistication that only a masterfully executed blend can deliver.

The wine’s immense structure is a result of precision sourcing. Martellotto utilized the rugged, volcanic slopes of Atlas Peak to give the Cabernet Sauvignon its muscular, high-elevation backbone, then balanced that brawn with Merlot and Syrah from the cooler Oak Knoll District. This "mountain meets valley" approach results in a silken texture loaded with smoked plum, dark chocolate, and cracked pepper. It’s a bold, sophisticated red that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the valley’s heaviest hitters.

In the rolling hills of California Wine Country, there's a story that wine critics whisper about in hushed, reverent tones. It's the story of Greg Martellotto, a man whose Italian bloodline carries centuries of winemaking wisdom, and whose obsessive pursuit of perfection has created something extraordinary.

Since 2005, Greg has been crafting wines in his family's tradition, using techniques passed down through generations of Italian vintners. But this isn't your typical family story. Greg took those ancestral secrets and spent decades refining them, perfecting them, pushing them beyond what even his forefathers imagined possible. His mastery recently earned him recognition as a certified Italian Wine Ambassador—one of only 450 people worldwide to receive this prestigious honor.

The result? Wines so exceptional that they've been flying completely under the radar, known only to a select few who stumble upon Martellotto's tiny production runs of fewer than 8,000 cases per year. For years, Greg's wines consistently earned 90+ ratings and collected double gold medals in blind competitions.

The 2023 Napa Valley vintage isn’t just another great year – it’s the year that will be etched in history. Wine experts are calling it "the vintage of a lifetime," and for good reason. The perfect blend of cool temperatures, morning fog, and balanced sunlight created conditions so exceptional, they’re being compared to Bordeaux's iconic 1961 vintage. As The Wine Independent put it, 2023 is "a winemaker's dream in terms of wine style." Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil calls it "one of the most phenomenal vintages ever in Napa Valley." This is Napa at its finest, with wines of depth, power, and elegance that will be the talk of the wine world for decades to come.

WOW! We love this wine. Jam packed with blueberry, boysenberry, and blackberry fruits, this wine is a slam dunk. Layers of oak, vanilla, cocoa, and graphite, this blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 40% Syrah, it will make you feel like you've gotten away with something. It's that good, and for the money, it's the best Napa Red blend in the store. Hands down. The problem? Only 4 barrels were produced and this one is going to be gone in a NY minute.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A full-bodied, dark-fruited red wine with an opulent feel, marked by rich layers of elegant cedar spice weaving around succulent, silken dark fruit. Crushed cocoa nibs add lift, while velvety tannins frame the palate, and a lingering blood orange finish provides brightness balanced by a smoky-savoury minerality that layers intrigue. Grape sources include Atlas Peak and Oak Knoll for Cabernet and Merlot, with Syrah also sourced from the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. ~94 Decanter
