About The Wine

Four miles from the Pacific, fog rolls off the ocean and stalls over the vines. That cool-climate patience is the whole story here. Jespersen Ranch sits in the extreme northwest corner of the Edna Valley — Niner's coastal jewel, planted to a diverse set of Pinot Noir clones in a pocket built for the variety. The fog buys hang time, and hang time builds the wine: bright red fruit and bramble up front, silky tannins underneath, the kind of texture that only comes from grapes grown slow and farmed by people who own every row.

Molly Bohlman is the winemaker, she caught the wine bug studying abroad in the South of France and never shook it. She earned a Fruit Science degree at Cal Poly, then spent two decades learning the business from every angle — vineyard science, sales, and winemaking-by-doing. Before joining Niner in 2014, she was winemaker for Paul Hobbs' Crossbarn label. Based in San Luis Obispo, minutes from the ranch she farms, Molly makes Pinot that lets the coast speak instead of talking over it.

Niner is a second-generation, family-owned winery, more than twenty years into the ground. Richard Niner — a West Virginia farm kid turned Princeton and Harvard Business School grad — discovered the Central Coast in the 1990s, saw a region that could rival Napa, and bought his first vineyard in 2001. He added Jespersen Ranch in 2011. In 2013, his son Andy took over to carry the legacy forward. Every bottle is 100% estate grown: Niner makes wine only from grapes they farm themselves.

This is one of the most genuinely sustainable estates in California. The winery and tasting room are LEED Certified and 100% solar powered. All vineyards are SIP Certified — and in 2016 Niner became the first business ever to earn the program's Winery Certification. In 2023 they took home the California Green Medal Award for Business. Real farming: own compost, no herbicides, recycled wastewater, rainwater recapture.

Pour it for the table. This is Pinot built for food and good company — exactly how the Niner family intended.

100% Pinot Noir. This classic and elegant Pinot Noir opens with a vibrant bouquet of bright cranberry and sweet candied orange, beautifully lifted by delicate aromas of fresh rose petals. On the palate, its classic varietal character shines through with a sophisticated structure and depth, a result of expert whole-cluster and French oak aging. The experience rounds out with a long, balanced finish marked by subtle, rustic undertones of rich earth and wet clay.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Potent aromas of fresh cherry are bold on the nose of this single-vineyard expression, as cracked cardamom adds a spicy kick. The palate is awash in creamy tannins and a full mouthfeel, with rich flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, chai tea and pepper working in harmony. ~95 Wine Enthusiast
