About The Wine

Before there was Ken Wright Cellars, there was Panther Creek.

Wright founded it in 1986 in McMinnville — his first winery, and where he started building his reputation as one of Oregon's Pinot pioneers. He set up shop in the town's old power station and made the kind of concentrated, collector-grade Pinot that got Robert Parker calling Panther Creek's output "some of Oregon's most concentrated and age worthy wines."

The pedigree didn't stop when Wright moved on. Since 2013, Tony Rynders — the winemaker who built Domaine Serene's reputation — has shaped the house style as consulting winemaker.

2023 Winemaker's Cuvée is the blend that shows what that pedigree tastes like. Instead of leaning on a single site, Panther Creek pulls Pinot Noir from selected vineyards across the Willamette Valley, each chosen for richness, complexity, and structure.

The result is generous and juicy — just-crushed cherry and blueberry fruit, cranberry snap, a thread of green tea and dusky spice, and subtle oak keeping it interesting rather than heavy.

This is the bottle I'd hand someone who thinks good Oregon Pinot has to hurt the wallet.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Broad, generous and juicy, this openly fruity and gulp-able wine tastes fresh in just-crushed cherries and blueberries, with subtle oak spices for added interest. A medium body and moderate tannins keep it lively and appetizing. ~ 92 James Suckling

Precise and snappy, with sleek flavors of cherry, cranberry, green tea and dusky spices that end with refined tannins. ~ 91 Wine Spectator

The 2023 Pinot Noir Winemakers Cuvée opens in the glass with licorice and rose tones that give way to crushed raspberries. This is a juicy effort, offering tart wild berry fruits and a cascade of inner florals. The 2023 finishes juicy and long, with an air of violet inner florals and a hint of tart cherry that slowly fades. ~ 90 Vinous Media
