About The Wine

To Kalon is the name that separates serious collectors from everyone else. First planted in 1868, acquired and meticulously replanted by Andy Beckstoffer in 1993, this 89-acre parcel in Oakville has delivered some of Napa's most monumental Cabernet for over a century. Realm Cellars has been working with fruit from this site since 2002, back when they were a virtual winery cherry-picking the valley's most coveted vineyards. Beckstoffer makes the grapes available to only a small number of producers. You're looking at one of them.

The 2023 vintage was what Realm's Chris Cooney called a 'no pressure' year—ideal growing conditions that let winemaker Benoit Touquette pick early and preserve the tension between opulence and freshness that defines modern Realm. This is 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc, sourced from blocks planted to Clones 4 and 337. Touquette is the meticulous technician who famously poured an entire vintage down the drain over a hint of Brett. His focus: chiseled fruit, expressive minerality, potent structure. The wines from To Kalon, he says, are "so dense, so opulent"—but in his hands, they're also taut and precise.

Lisa Perotti-Brown MW awarded it a perfect 100 points and called it "classic To Kalon—rich and structured with firm yet velvety tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and ferrous." An unnamed critic wrote that the tannins are remarkably elegant "in a site that has mostly produced huge, potent wines." The wine opens with cassis, violets, juicy blackberries, then reveals Chinese five spice, dusty soil, garrigue. Full-bodied, creamy contours, a finish that goes on forever.

Production is 1,500 cases. The wine will cellar effortlessly for three decades. This is a trophy bottle for anyone building a serious Napa collection—the kind of wine that proves the room.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard is another captivating, hauntingly beautiful wine from Realm. More than anything else, I am so impressed with how elegant the tannins are in a site that has mostly produced huge, potent wines.
