About The Wine

This is what Sonoma Coast Chardonnay was supposed to be.

Walt and Joan Flowers founded the estate in 1989, when almost nobody believed you could grow great Pinot two miles from the Pacific Ocean. Only Hirsch and Bohan were out there. Today, the area has a name — the "extreme Sonoma Coast" — and Flowers is its founding family. Their estate vineyards, Camp Meeting Ridge and Sea View Ridge, sit on wild, windswept ridges between 1,150 and 1,875 feet, just above the marine fog layer. Plantings within the entire Fort Ross-Seaview AVA make up only 2% of its total acreage. This is some of the rarest, hardest-won Pinot terroir in California.

The pedigree runs deep. Wine Enthusiast calls Flowers a "training ground" for some of California's most legendary cool-climate winemakers — Steve Kistler, Ross Cobb, Greg La Follette, and Hugh Chapelle all passed through. Today the estate is owned by the Huneeus family (Quintessa, Faust), with Chantal Forthun leading the winemaking since 2012.

2024 follows the same recipe that earned Flowers its devoted following: estate fruit from Camp Meeting Ridge alongside select grapes from like-minded growers, organic farming, hand-harvesting, native-yeast fermentation, and a light hand with oak (just 18% new French barrels, 20% in stainless tank). Aged 16 months in barrel before bottling.

This is a Chardonnay with restraint. At 13.5% alcohol, it leans Burgundian rather than buttery — racy citrus, ocean-spray salinity, fine-grained texture, minimal makeup.

It's the bottle you pour when someone says they "don't really like California Chardonnay" and want to be proven wrong.

100% Chardonnay sourced from organically farmed coastal vineyards along the rugged Sonoma Coast.

Energetic and bright, with aromas of Meyer lemon, just-ripe mandarin orange, white flowers, and a fine mist of green citrus oil mingling with pithy herbaceous notes and ocean-spray minerality. The palate is finely-woven and precise — mouthwatering acidity, savory preserved lemon, a hint of spice, and briny coastal salinity that lifts the texture and expands across the mid-palate.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Lemon sorbet and orange sherbet, plus details of lemongrass, lemon verbena, and both fresh and dried ginger notes, show touches of saline and white tea on the long and detailed finish, with plenty of intensity and sleek, mouthwatering acidity that give this precision. Drink now through 2036. 23,500 cases made. ~ 93 Wine Spectator

The 2024 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is a terrific introduction to the range. Apricot, white flowers, mint, white pepper and tangerine oil are nicely pushed forward. The warmer season yielded an especially forward, open-knit Chardonnay. It's a style that works quite well at this level. ~ 91 Vinous Media
