About The Wine

Laura Catena built Luca to prove a point: that small quantities, artisan focus, and true terroir could put Mendoza on the map for wines that rival anywhere. She worked with small growers, securing fruit from some of Argentina's highest, oldest, lowest-yielding vineyards. The result is a portfolio that balances family intimacy — Luca is named after her first son — with serious winemaking ambition.

The G-Lot is the vineyard that started it all. Planted in 1992 at 4,900 feet in Gualtallary, it was the first extreme high-altitude Chardonnay in Mendoza. Rocky soils dense with calcareous sediments deliver mineral aromatics and the kind of taut acidity that keeps high-elevation fruit honest. This is widely considered among the very best premium whites in Mendoza — not because of hype, but because the place and the vines earned it.

Fermented at very low temperatures, 60% malolactic, then aged twelve months: 80% in a mix of 25% new and 75% second-use French oak, 20% in stainless steel. The winemaking walks the line between Old World restraint and New World fruit intensity — and nails it.

Creamy and flinty on the nose: lemon zest, pie crust, sour cream, a touch of meringue. Zesty and bright on the palate, medium to full body, limey and lightly creamy at the same time. Acid-driven but eclectic, with a zingy, lengthy finish. It's the kind of Chardonnay that makes $50 bottles look lazy.

94 Suckling, 93 Vinous, 92 Wine Advocate, 91 Wine Enthusiast, 91 Tim Atkin. Five critics, same conclusion. $29.88 for fruit from one of Mendoza's most respected high-altitude sites, made by one of Argentina's most respected families. That's the filter at work.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of pears and quince with touches of ginger, peaches and herbal freshness. The palate is lively and incisive, showing that same herbal freshness, supported by crunchy tannins. Drink now. ~95 James Suckling

Luca Chardonnay originates from some of the first vines planted in Gualtallary during the mid-1990s at the Adrianna Vineyard, where soils are rich in stone and limestone. While 80% of the wine is barrel-aged and undergoes malolactic fermentation—a process typically imparting a creamy, buttery profile—this Chardonnay remains distinct. The cool mountain influence at 1,500 meters elevation provides sharp acidity and citrus notes, resulting in a crisp body and a structured, tannic finish that pairs exceptionally well with king crab.~ 94 Descorchados

The 2024 Chardonnay G-Lot from Uco Valley was aged for 12 months: 80% in 25% new and 75% second-use French oak, 20% in stainless steel. Fragrant, it opens with prominent oak, coconut, caramel, cedar, acacia and green apple aromas. This is indulgent, dry, broad and fresh, with flavorful intensity balancing richness and brightness. The 2024 is a finely calibrated crowd-pleaser with a modern touch. ~94 Vinous Media

~ 93 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

Balances vibrancy and richness well, with chive flower and lemony elements up front joining toasted almond, melon and peach flavors that linger on a refreshing note. Shows hints of slate on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 1,400 cases made, 700 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator

From two lots within Gualtallary, including the grand Adrianna Vineyard estate, the 2024 Chardonnay G-Lot has a little bit of new oak (25%) for adding richness and a bit of malolactic fermentation for the same cause. Unctuously layered and textured, it has medium-bodied intensity, and a softness of lemon verbena and fresh pear seasoned in baking spice. Drink now through 2030. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Luca

Luca is Laura Catena's old-vine project in the Uco Valley, named for her first son and launched the year he was born. It was among the first Argentine labels to bottle Malbec entirely from old, ungrafted vines — the bet being that older fruit carries more genetic depth than young plantings can fake. The wines come off high-altitude sites near 3,500 feet, where wide day-night temperature swings keep the fruit bright instead of jammy.
