Chateau d'Issan is a Third Growth estate in Margaux with nine centuries of winemaking history — wine from the property was served at Eleanor of Aquitaine's 1152 royal wedding to the future King of England. The Cruse family has owned d'Issan since 1945, and under Emmanuel Cruse's leadership since 1998, the estate has transformed into a property that competes with the very best Margaux can produce. The investment has been methodical, expensive, and absolute — new sorting tables, pneumatic press, and plot-by-plot vinification to preserve each microclimate's signature.

The vineyard totals 41 hectares and abuts Chateau Palmer and Chateau Margaux — gravel soils over clay subsoil planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. Annual production of the Grand vin is only 6,000 cases. The 2025 harvest ran September 11 to 23, and the wine was aged in 50% new French oak. The blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot.

Violets, black cherries, blueberries, blackberries, cocoa, cedar, and cigar box fill the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is lively, creamy, deep, long, and pure — opulent fruit and velvety tannins wrapped in the structure that defines classic Margaux. Jane Anson scored it 95-97 and called it "packed with promise… constructed with a future in mind. Rose buds, cassis, damson… unroll in layers with slate, woodsmoke and cold ash." Jeff Leve gave it 96 points. Alexandre Ma scored it 95-97.

The wine is approachable even in its youth — a departure from older d'Issan vintages that demanded a decade before opening. This one could drink three to four years after release, but has the structure and density to cellar for decades. Decant two to three hours if you pull the cork young. 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of the Cruse family as owners of d'Issan — a milestone vintage from a property finally operating at the level its 1855 Third Growth classification always promised.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A tight and juicy red with blackberry, cherry, plum, and spice aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with a creamy texture and a crunchy finish. Refined for the vintage, with plenty of character and length. ~ 96-97 James Suckling

The 2025 d'Issan is fabulous. Inky and racy to the core, the 2025 Issan has so much to offer. Crème de cassis, menthol, licorice, cloves, gravel and mocha all meld together in the glass. Sumptuous and seamless with exceptional balance, the 2025 is a real stunner. This is an especially dense d'Issan that reflects the intensity of the year. Tasted two times.~94-96 Vinous Media

Cassis, black cherries, smoky tobacco, graphite, and a chalky minerality all shine from the 2025 Château D'Issan, a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot that's being raised in 50% new barriques with the balance in once-used barrels. Reminding me slightly of the 2016 with its balance and elegance, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a pure, graceful mouthfeel, fine tannins, and outstanding length. It builds beautifully with time in the glass, and checking in at 13.73% alcohol with a pH of 3.63, this is going to be an incredibly satisfying, classic, complex Margaux that exudes class and elegance. ~ 94-96 Jeb Dunnuck

Marked by a spicy, oaky profile, the 2025 D'Issan reveals aromas of lead pencil, tobacco and dark berries. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and dense, it’s built around an assertive tannic frame and concludes with a long, spicy finish. Quite introverted at this stage, it will need to gain in elegance and harmony with élevage. ~ 90-92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Chateau d'Issan

The vineyard totals 41 hectares (100 acres) and abuts other Margaux châteaux, including Château Palmer and Château Margaux. The grape varieties cultivated are 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. Château d'Issan produces annually 6,000 cases of the Grand vin. A second wine is made under the label Blason d'Issan. Emmanuel Cruse has been a winemaker since 2008. Since 2008, Emmanuel Cruse is Grand Maître of the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc, Graves, Sauternes et Barsac. Since 2010, Emmanuel Cruse is President of the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux and Grand Maître of the Commanderie de Bordeaux worldwide. In 1152, wine from the estate was served for the royal wedding between Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henri II, when it was known as Chateau Lamothe Cantenac. In the 17th century, the estate became the official possession of the d'Essenault family.
