The Chateau du Tertre is a thousand-year-old estate whose vineyard, stretching over 52 hectares, remains unchanged since 1855. During the 19th Century, the Chateau de Tertre wines rose to worldwide fame, especially thanks to the 1855 classification which established the Chateau as a Margaux Grand Cru Classe (5th Growth). 1n 1997, a Dutch businessman, Eric Albada Jelgersma bought the estate and invested in the large-scale overall restructuring, thus returning its former noble personality to the Chateau du Tertre.

Located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château du Tertre benefits from an exceptional terroir. The vineyard sits on a gentle rise—referred to as a “tertre” in French—composed of deep gravel and sand, providing ideal drainage and warmth for optimal grape ripening. Its proximity to the Gironde estuary and surrounding forests creates a unique microclimate, adding freshness and complexity to the wines.

Since its acquisition by the Helfrich family in 2021, the estate has continued its commitment to meticulous vineyard management, including hand-harvesting and a transition toward biodynamic farming. The winemaking process at Château du Tertre is rooted in precision, with vinification carried out in a mix of wooden, concrete, and stainless-steel vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels to enhance depth and refinement.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot. The Château du Tertre is a bold yet refined expression of Margaux, showcasing layers of dark berries, ripe plums, and cassis. Notes of liquorice, tobacco, and graphite add complexity, while hints of violets and smoked earth bring depth. On the palate, the wine is opulent and structured, with polished tannins and a supple texture. Aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak, it gains subtle touches of spice and vanilla, enhancing its richness without overpowering its elegance.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The texture and depth are really impressive for this chateau and might be its best wine ever. It’s medium-bodied with integrated and refined tannins, a powdery and textured mouthfeel and an endless finish. Floating on the pure fruit. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot. ~ 96-97 James Suckling

Ripe red fruit and exotic spiced notes on the nose. Juicy, succulent and clean, this has great energy and such well integrated tannins so that they give the frame and structure but very lightly letting the raspberry and red cherry fruit speak as well as a soft wet stone and flint touches. Refined and elegant and really approachable too. I like this a lot. One to watch. 3.58pH. 70 IPT. 75% of grand vin. Ageing 40% new oak, 60% one-year-old barrels. ~ 94 Decanter

A pretty, perfumed wine, the 2025 Château Du Tertre offers ample cassis and exotic blue fruits intermixed with spicy oak and herbal and floral nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has fine, polished tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and remarkable purity, precision, and elegance. It's one of those underrated, complex wines that builds beautifully with time in the glass, and it might match or even exceed the 2022. Bravo. ~ 93-95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2025 Château du Tertre was picked 8 to 22 September and matured in 40% new oak. It is cohesive and focused on the nose, plenty of graphite-infused black fruit that nudges it stylistically towards Pauillac. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with, again, quite a Pauillac-like entry thanks to that graphite edge. Well defined with satisfying length, this is a classy du Tertre, one of the best I have tasted from barrel. ~ 92-94 Vinous Media

The 2025 Château du Tertre, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot (40% new oak), reveals a bouquet of dark wild berries and spice along with discreet, well-integrated oak. Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and dense, it's also structured with elegant, youthful tannins and concludes with a long, ethereal and dark fruit–inflected finish. ~ 92-94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Chateau du Tertre

In 1989, Benjamin Sichel took over the management of the estate. Maison Sichel is a family-owned Bordeaux négociant business since 1883. Maison Sichel remains a significant shareholder in Château Palmer. The vineyard area extends 32 hectares (79 acres). The vineyard is cultivated with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Ancient origins traced back to the Seigneurie d'Arsac documented as early as 1143. Passed through ownership of the Arrérac family and Marquis de Ségur until the 1855 classification. Sold to Jonas von Königswarter of Vienna in 1870. Acquired by Philippe Gasqueton in 1961, who restored the vineyards and château. Sold to Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma in 1995 following Gasqueton's death; Eric Albada Jelgersma bought the estate in 1997 and invested in large-scale restructuring.
