Sauternes sits on a quiet pedestal in Bordeaux — the appellation that turns noble rot into liquid gold. Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a Premier Cru Classe estate, one of the eleven properties named in the 1855 Classification that still defines the hierarchy of the region. The estate's limestone and gravel terroir, combined with the morning mists that rise from the Ciron river, create the conditions for botrytis to concentrate the fruit into something rare.

The 2025 vintage arrives as a pre-release — a chance to lock in allocation before the critics weigh in and the market resets the price. Lafaurie-Peyraguey's track record speaks: recent vintages have landed scores in the mid-90s, and the estate's reputation has only climbed under current stewardship.

Sauternes is the original dessert wine, but calling it that undersells the craft. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are hand-harvested in multiple passes, each cluster picked only when the noble rot has done its work. The result is a wine with the weight of honey and the cut of citrus — a balance that lets it cellar for decades or drink beautifully young with foie gras, blue cheese, or nothing at all.

This is the wine that makes converts of people who think they don't like sweet wine. The sweetness is framed by acidity sharp enough to keep the glass interesting from first sip to last. For $75, you're buying into one of Bordeaux's classified estates before the vintage is scored and the price adjusts upward. The smart play is to secure it now.

Classic Sauternes profile: honeyed stone fruit, apricot, and candied citrus peel, with the acidity to cut through the richness. The noble rot brings weight and texture; the terroir brings the spine that lets it cellar or drink now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Intense aromas of spices, saffron and orange peel. Medium-bodied with extract and phenolics that give it incredible length and structure. 175 g/L residual sugar. Botrytis is pure and clear. ~ 97-98 James Suckling

The 2025 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is the only cuvée this year, there is no second wine. This was cropped at 12 hl/ha between September 16 and October 9 via three tries, one just to clean the vineyard, and comprises 100% Sémillon with 175 g/l of residual sugar. It has a very nuanced bouquet that opens nicely with aeration, dried peach, pear and light waxy scents, a touch of saffron in the background. The palate is beautiful, very well balanced with pure botrytised fruit, a little almond and chamomile towards the finish with very well integrated oak. This is a really classy Sauternes that has a long future ahead. ~ 96-98 Vinous Media

Honeyed apricot, orange marmalade, mint, and ginger cracker nuances all emerge from the 2025 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, a full-bodied, unctuous, and beautifully put together Sauternes. On the palate, it brings lots of sweetness while staying fresh and lively, with a wonderful sense of freshness and a layered, seamless mouthfeel. This is 100% Sémillon, aging in a mix of barrels and stainless steel tanks; it checks in at 13.5% alcohol. ~ 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck

Richly spiced on the nose, lots of oak here. Bitter toast, chocolate, cedar and clove. Ripe and full, quite a luscious, heady style as you’d expect. Clean, grippy, focused and so pure, I like this personality and confidence. Overt, massy yet still not over the top. Quite hedonistic, and why not, this will have fans. ~ 93 Decanter
