Chateau Phelan Segur is one of Saint-Estephe's most storied estates, born in 1805 when Irishman Bernard Phelan acquired Clos de Garamey, then expanded it in 1810 with the purchase of Segur de Cabarnac. By 1860, Phelan had assembled the largest vineyard in the entire appellation — a legacy his son Frank cemented by serving as mayor of Saint-Estephe for three decades and building the chateau that still stands today. The estate has changed hands from the Delon family to Xavier Gardinier of Pommery Champagne fame, and most recently to Belgian investor Philippe Van de Vyvere in a 90-million-euro sale that underscored its standing among Bordeaux's elite.

The 2025 vintage delivers exactly what you want from Saint-Estephe: structure, density, and a dark spine of gravelly minerality that anchors waves of black fruit. Winemaker Veronique Dausse and consulting enologist Michel Rolland coaxed 65% grand vin production from 89 hectares of vines — 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot rounding out the blend. The yield was a restrained 29 hectoliters per hectare, aged in 55% new oak.

In the glass, the 2025 shows a vivid purple core with a bright pink rim. The nose opens on creamy strawberry, freshly cut herbs, and pink roses — inviting and lifted. The palate is smooth and supple, with filling tannins that coat the mouth and an excellent concentration that keeps pulling you back. The maturity of the tannins is the vintage's calling card — polished, balanced, and built to cellar a decade-plus while drinking beautifully young.

Jane Anson called it "one of the best I've tasted from this estate." That's the kind of statement you take seriously. Saint-Estephe at this level — from a chateau that routinely outperforms its Cru Bourgeois classification — is the smart play for anyone who knows the Left Bank and doesn't want to pay Pauillac premiums.

Vivid purple core with bright pink rim. Creamy strawberry, freshly cut herbs, and pink roses on the nose. Smooth and supple on the palate with filling tannins, excellent concentration, and a chewy, structured finish. Espresso, black cherries, licorice, and cedar notes weave through dark fruit. Drink now through the mid-2030s.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Well composed, structured and nicely framed, with a medium to full body and fine, firm tannins. Textural and slightly chalky on the palate. Solid and focused, with a long, driven finish. An elegant, refine and holistic wine. The shows depth structre and finesse. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verot. ~ 96-97 James Suckling

The 2025 Phélan Ségur was picked between September 10 and 26 at 29 hl/ha, matured in 55% new oak barrels. Again, this is a Saint-Estèphe that is cut in a more mellow and classical style compared to the 2020 or 2022, for example. Mainly black fruit, the Cabernet-dominated scents of cedar and tobacco emerge within a couple of swirls, with just a light touch of tea leaves in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-boned tannins matched by a silver thread of acidity. Very well balanced and unequivocally in the more elegant style, without the concentration or voluptuousness of the 2022. This is more sleek and refined, ergo, an earlier-drinking Phélan Ségur that delivers elegance and refinement. Just a lovely Saint-Estèphe that was presumed vanquished by global warming. ~ 93-95 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Phelan Segur

The vineyard area extends 89 hectares or 220 acres. Grape varieties used are 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Michel Rolland is employed as a consulting enologist. Château Phélan Ségur is a Cru Bourgeois or non-classified wine from Saint-Estèphe. Château Phélan Ségur is noted as being of excellent quality, comparable to or better than some Grand Cru Classé wines. The official history began when two previous Bordeaux vineyards, Clos de Garramey and Segur, were combined by Bernard Phelan. By 1860, Bernard Phelan had created the largest vineyard in the entire Saint Estephe appellation. The chateau was built by Frank Phelan, the son of Bernard Phelan in the late 1860s. In 1946, the property was purchased by the Delon family. Xavier Gardinier, former head of Pommery Champagne, purchased the vineyard in 1985.
