About The Wine

Giuseppe Papadopoli planted his first vines outside San Giorgio Ionico in 1991, just five meters from the Ionian Sea, inside the Primitivo di Manduria DOC. By 2005 he and his sons Salvatore and Federico were bottling their first Negroamaro, applying four generations of Puglian grape-growing knowledge to fruit grown on calcareous clay at 60 meters above sea level.

This is their entry Primitivo — eight-year-old vines over five hectares, hand-harvested in early September, fermented and aged entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve the varietal's bright red-fruit core. No oak. No distortion. The goal is typicality: let the grape and the place speak without interference.

Puglia's heel is Primitivo country — the same genetic material as California Zinfandel, but grown in chalky Mediterranean soils under relentless southern Italian sun. The result is ripe without being heavy, soft without being flabby, built for the table instead of the tasting room. Ruby-red with violet edges, the nose shows red berries, blackberry, plum, and a floral violet note. The palate is round and soft, with a fruity finish that drinks well above its $21.99 price.

This is the kind of Primitivo that makes $40 Zinfandel look overworked. Pair it with pasta in red sauce, cured meats, or aged cheeses — or just pull the cork and drink it while you cook. The wine is young, fresh, and built to be opened, not pondered.

THE PRODUCER

Giustini

Giuseppe Papadopoli purchased the family's first estate in the district of Giustini in 1991. In 2005, the winery released its first label, Vecchio Sogno. The winery opened its permanent home in San Giorgio Jonico in 2015. Giuseppe Papadopoli purchased his first own hectares in 1991. He launched his first wine of Negroamaro grapes in 2005, Vecchio Sogno, meaning 'old dreams', in tribute to his grandfather's dream to have his own winery one day. In 2015, they opened their own winery and could bottle the wines with their own labels.
