About The Wine

"Meraviglioso" means wonderful. Ivano Trombino built it to drink himself — the amaro he wanted to exist and couldn't find anywhere else. That impulse shows. Where Roger is angular and unfiltered and combative, Meraviglioso is herbal and meditative and complex. They are from the same Rural Agricultural Society, named after characters from the same 1871 shipwreck. They are not the same drink.

Everything that goes into this bottle comes from two specific land plots in Calabria: Martorano 300/343 and Bisignano 674. The Sila mountains — the ancient massif that dominates central Calabria — contribute eucalyptus, pine, laurel, and basil. From the farmland: rosemary, aloe, and olive leaf, a character you don't encounter in most Italian amari. Gentian, rhubarb, cinchona, and quassia provide the bitter architecture underneath. White cane sugar at 18% brings balance without softening the edge. At 25% ABV, serve it room temperature or cold at 5°C with ice. The producer recommends pairing it with mezcal or tequila in cocktail applications. They are right.

This is the first bottle in the VMD lineup to carry "Trombino & Sons" on the label — Ivano's acknowledgment that what started as a personal dream has become a family signature. The 1871 shipwreck story still runs through it: the ship from Panama that wrecked between Paola and Tropea, the survivors who sheltered at Giocondo's customs warehouse, the notebook Ivano found that started everything. But Meraviglioso is Ivano's own statement, built around the Calabrian land he works every day and the drink he wanted to pour for himself at the end of it. If you already know Jefferson from our catalog — the flagship, the citrus-forward one — think of Meraviglioso as its herbal counterpart. Same farm. Different landscape.

Built on eucalyptus, laurel, rosemary, pine, aloe, basil, and olive leaf from Sila mountain plots, with gentian, rhubarb, cinchona, and quassia providing the bitter structure.

Amber in color, clear rather than cloudy — this is the more refined sibling. On the nose, eucalyptus and Mediterranean scrub lead, with aromatic herbs, citrus zest, and subtle floral notes layered beneath.

The palate is intense and complex: the bitterness is present and deliberate, but the vegetable character of the Sila mountain botanicals dominates rather than the citrus bite that defines Roger.

Olive leaf adds a distinctive mid-palate note that most amari don't have. Balanced and long. The finish is meditative, dry, and herbal — lingers well past the last sip.
