Candy & Wine Halloween Pairings

Candy & Wine Halloween Pairings

The candy bowl is for the doorbell. The leftovers are for you.

Four wines, eight candies, and bottles from our own racks for each.
One rule before you start: the wine should be at least as sweet as the candy, or the wine tastes thin and sour.

Sweet Riesling · Tawny Port · Ruby Port · Moscato

Sweet Riesling: Starburst + Skittles

Fruit chews are sweet and tangy at the same time.
Sweet Riesling is too: ripe fruit, a little sugar, and acidity that matches the tang bite for bite.

Start with a Kabinett, the lighter end of sweet German Riesling.

Tawny Port: Reese's + Snickers

Peanuts and caramel, meet nuts and caramel.
Tawny Port spends years in wood and comes out tasting of toffee and toasted nuts. That's the whole trick.

The older the tawny, the nuttier it gets. The 10 Year is where I'd start.

Ruby Port: Kit Kat + M&M's

Milk chocolate plus dark berries is the chocolate-covered-cherry move.
Ruby Port is young, sweet and full of red fruit, so it holds its own against the chocolate instead of turning bitter.

Moscato: Candy Corn + Gummy Bears

Candy corn and gummy bears are pure sugar. Don't fight it.
Moscato is light, peachy and sweet, and the bubbles keep each handful from getting heavy.

Candy & Wine FAQ

What wine goes with Halloween candy?

Sweet wine. Sweet Riesling, Port or Moscato. The wine should be at least as sweet as the candy; otherwise it tastes thin and sour.

What wine goes with chocolate candy like Kit Kat or M&M's?

Ruby Port. Its sweet red fruit pairs with milk chocolate the way cherries do.

What wine goes with Reese's or Snickers?

Tawny Port. Its nutty, toffee flavors mirror the peanuts and caramel.

What wine goes with fruity candy like Starburst or Skittles?

Sweet Riesling. It has the sugar to match and the acidity to handle the tang.

What wine goes with candy corn or gummy bears?

Moscato. It's light, sweet and lightly sparkling, so it keeps up with pure-sugar candy without weighing it down.

Can I drink dry red wine with candy?

You can, but sugar makes dry wine taste more bitter. A sweet wine is the safer pour.
